Greetings all,

I haven't been on the rec.scuba boards in a while, mostly because I
haven't able to afford to dive in quite a while.

Will be going down to St. John, V.I. this March, and would like to
know dive outfits that are reputable and will provide good value.  This
is strictly rec diving, nothing too strenuous, as we will be just
getting back into it.  We will of course do a refresher course here in
Colorado before we go.  But what are some of the must-see dive spots in
and around St. John?

Thanks,
Nathan Shafer

We were very happy with Low Key Watersports (http://www.divelowkey.com/). Their
prices will be about the same as other ops, but we think they're a better outfit. The
two guys who joined us for our last day, and the night dive had spent a few days
using Cruz Bay Watersports and liked their day with Low Key better, too. We got
better value than we expected when they didn't charge my wife for using one of their
wetsuits for the week, didn't charge her for a week with a rental reg when hers
crapped out, and gave her a light for free rather than trying to rent her one for our
night dive.

Check on the cost of just getting some extra attention for your first dive in St
John. Most of the sites won't be particularly challenging, anyway, and you can ask
that your first day be at easier sites.

Some will tell you that the Rhone is a must. My friends thought the Chikuzen was much
better, but it's too far for a trip from the Cruz Bay area. Coral Bay watersports
might offer a Chikuzen trip. Either will cost a good bit more than the local sites. I
particularly liked Tek Tite and Grass Cay (maybe it was Mingo Cay?), but enjoyed them
all.

Steve, the most complete information about St. John is at
www.stjohntravelforum.com.  You can see both low key watersports and cruz bay
watersports there.
