chrisbrg@pacbell.net - 10 Dec 2004 00:42 GMT Does anyone have any information on the "old" PLG hotel in Cozumel. We were there the week before they closed down for renovation and I was wondering if anyone has seen the "new" PLG.
Think they replaced the rock hard beds they were famous for?

The last I heard, the estimates for completion have been moved back to March/April.

They had dump trucks hauling rubble out.
Given the speed of construction in Cozumel, April is optimistic.

It's now called the Cozumel Palace. It's an all inclusive and we were very interested in staying at in Feb. till we got the price from my travel agent, 3000.00 for two. That's from MLT. It's it is supposed to be open now. I would guess that they are probably going to be in the fixing it up stage for many months. Looks like it's back to the Casa Del Mar.

mslf500 - 15 Dec 2004 21:27 GMT I hope you will have a choice of all inclusive and not inclusive....
I guess I'll need to find another place to stay......we've stayed at PLG at least nine times. We like it because we can walk into town and have dinner at a great place every night. OK, OK, if we really needed to, we could have two dinners every night and still not run out of good places to go.
I can see being an all inclusive being a disaster. Who would eat there with 20 good places w/i a 5-10 minute walk?

They won't get many divers, I'll bet.
WTF are they going to offer that will make them worth that kind of money when there are tons of much cheaper (but still very nice) accomodations available all over the island? Hot and cold running hookers? ;^)

Chuck Chatham - 21 Dec 2004 14:39 GMT Just returned from Coz. Plaza Las Glorious now has "air conditioned" rooms. Walls have been removed and nothing replaced them yet. There is a new condiminium next door but it will be quite a while before PLG is open for business again. It is now (Dec 21st) an empty shell but they are actively working on it.
There are lots of nice places to stay on the island, but there is major street renovation going on from the downtown to PLG. Kind of a mess, but due to be finished in Feb. Baracuca is just down the street from PLG, on the ocean, and has all ocean view rooms.
We stayed at Vista Del Mar for about $50 per night (two weeks) for a room overlooking the street and the sea. Friends stayed at the Meson (on the square) for a little less, and we looked at most of the hotels in the downtown area. Prices ranges from $29 per night for air conditioned room at the Palma Dorado (nice small hotel with rooms and suites one block from town center - suite for two AC, kitchen, LR, bath and two double beds - $45 - beds in the suite we looked at were fabulously soft and comfortable - unusual for Coz) to $130 for a two bedroom condo that sleeps 8 at the Hacienda San Migel just north of downtown.

Who would eat there with > 20 good places w/i a 5-10 minute walk? Some people don't care about where they eat, if they are certain of food costs and free alcohol (even if it is only well drinks). Like you, we enjoy visiting restaurants away from the resort property, so we do not stay at all-inclusives (not to mention they are generally much more crowded) but from what I have seen all over Mexico all-inclusives are a raging success with most new hotels in the resort or hotel areas following that pattern.
mslf500 - 17 Dec 2004 16:00 GMT I've never understood, unless you have kids, why anyone would stay at an all inclusive. OK, maybe Jamaica because of the crime, but why be a prisoner in your own hotel?

My wife and I have been at the PLG for the last four years. If it is an all inclusive I won't go. Too many places to go and eat, and the price quoted here seemed awfully high. When I go back I may stay in one of the places in town.

I toured Hotel Meson de San Miguel. It's on the north side of the plaza, about 100 yards from Ave. R Melgar. Recently renovated, nice rooms. Compact, but what the heck. Satellite TV in the room, internet cafe downstairs, newly retiled pool. Prices were quite reasonable, $65/nt during high season.

Mark Lindsey - 18 Dec 2004 13:32 GMT I've walked into Casa Mexico as well. The inside looked nice. Too bad it isn't on the water.

If I was there by myself and was only diving I might since most (located South) dive sites would be closer. I do like the town square and the festival on Sunday. There are many great restaurants that we like to go to. My wife likes to shop so PLG was great. Next time I may go and stay at one of the hotels the dive shop has packages with. The all inclusives are great if your intent is to eat & drink.
