I am planning on a trip to Puerto Morelos in January.  Any recommedations on
diving.  Is it possible to do it on the Cheap or do you have to take the
charters?

Cancun has some nice diving.  But being so close to Cozumel makes it
worth the extra effort to get over there to dive.

I met someone the other night, that actually prefers to dive Cancun and/or
Playa, instead of Cozumel.  Apparently, this diver though having had dozens
of dives at Coz over the years has never seen a turtle there but always does
on the Cancun side.  I was quite surprised.  Any comments?

I have only done one dive in Cancun.  My first ocean dive '89.  The
water was spectacular, but the currents were ripping.  The guys we dove
with started the dive by having us swim into the strong current.  So
strong that going down the line upon entering pulled my mask away from
my face.  We burned a lot of air just starting the dive.

I prefer Coz

After you got your mask back on, did you see any turtles?

:^)

It was the first time I had ever heard a diver say that they preferred
Cancun to Coz, hence my surprise. Oh, it was also the first time I'd ever
heard a diver that had been to Coz (more than once) say that they'd never
seen any turtles there.

I was so visually overwhelmed (plus I had been up since 3AM) I don't
remember what the hell I saw) I guess I could check my log book

That does seem odd....  having filled more than one logbook from Coz, it
seems odd when I don't see one, rather than when I do.  Maybe this other
diver's attention was focused on something else?

I've had many dives in Coz and Cancun and I have never seen any turtles, or
perhaps I should say "almost never" because maybe I just don't remember. I
*do* remember that the most turtles I have ever seen on any dive was when I
dove in Akumal, south of Playa del Carmen. So if the guys want so see lots
of turtles, I would suggest Akumal.

And that was what the diver was saying.

Well, ya, I thought so too.

Can't imagine what.  The diver is quite experienced, so it's not a situation
like a newbie, who often misses lots of stuff.

When I dove Cozumel last May, I lost count of how many turtles we saw.
There were plenty of them.

Turtles every day last week.  Also splendid toadfish.  Looked at
Carol's pics today, gonna drop mine off tomorrow.  I'll have CDs and
prints on Tuesday.

I saw turtles on every dive when I was Cozumel two weeks ago.

It was my first time to Coz/  I thought it was classic Caribbean diving, much
like T&C and the Caymans, both of which I've been to a few times.  I had a
great time.
