Are there any internet cafes in Cozumel?  My m-i-l is kind of freaked
because we don't have a phone in the room and she wants to be able to
reach us "in case something happens".  So I figured email might work,
although we might check it daily just to keep up with traffic (I have
a low spam email address that's only about two months old).

Thanks, trip report by the 6th.

No problem.  Here's a handy site:

Well, a small problem, one of those is gone.  However, there are several
scattered around, well marked (all in town), so just pick one nearby.
The Calling Station is likely the oldest and popular (just south of the
town square).  I've used the one between Dive Paradise shop and the Rock
n' Java Cafe (bottom level Edificio Colon bldg. on Rafael Melgar Av.)

Yes, but do not report to us from Coz and tell us what a great time you
are having!

Okay.  However, expect a personal email from me telling you what a
great time we're having.

However, it looks like rain for a lot of the week.

Hope you have a great time.  I have never had a day of diving canceled
because of weather, or surface conditions (in Coz)

good luck! and enjoy!

I have.  Too much wind and the boats don't go out.  Just as well
actually, the intent is to have fun and small boats in rough water
ain't fun.

Yup, small boats are pretty rough in +20 knot winds, but the port
authority in Coz closes the ports to mitigate their risk of litigation
from unjured Americans than their concern for how rough it is on us.  On
those days, I often hoof it to a cenote or two.

If the seas are really rough, I'd stay on shore even if the boats were
giong out, and even if I paid in advance.  I'm on vacation to have fun
and that ain't it.

I wouldn't worry too much about it; it is what it is and there's not a
thing in the world you can do about it.  FWIW, when I went down there
for 12 days in May, both the Weather Underground and the Weather Channel
had predicted either "thunderstorms" or "chance of a thunderstorm" for
every single day we were there.  What we got was a couple of ten minute
showers, and otherwise scattered clouds in blue sky the whole trip.

Don't worry, be happy...

Got back yesterday.  It's rainy (well it just stopped) and pretty
chill in Oak Hill.  Friday we had 88 and sunny, miss that place
already.

Had I known it, I would have taken my laptop.  Scuba Club put up free
wireless in the bar/restaurant two weeks ago (erh, three now).

Trip report coming.

I used an internet cafe just north of the McDonalds in town.

There are many, many internet cafes throughout the downtown
area of Coz.

Unless you're familiar with the Spanish Windows and Spanish
keyboards (with upside down question marks and other special
characters), make sure you avoid these.

I've used a keyboard on which nearly ALL the symbols are NOT
what were indicated on the keys, and it took "ALT 64" to type
the "@" key.  :-)

There was on cafe just off the plaza that was charging $1/minute and
getting no traffic.  Of course, that was one peso, but touristas
didn't know the difference.  Everything is priced in dollars in the
tourist zone.

Even the clueless touristas are not THAT clueless.

In whatever zone, the SYMBOL for one Neuvo PESO is $.  So is the
SYMBOL for the Merkin' $.  Those are often posted as $10 USD to mean
10 US dollars rather than 10 pesos, which is worth about $1 USD.

When they differ by a factor of 10, you have to ber very, very
clueless to get them confused.

The internet at the photo/phone shop north of the McDonald does charge
$1 peso per minute or $1 USD for 10 minutes -- which is about average.
The larger internet cafe on the Square charge higher rates.

As noted, there are now hotels that have FREE internet for registered
guests.

The $ symbol is also used for the Polynesian Francs.

When you see a wood carving in the straw market priced at $4,500,
there is very little chance that anyone would think it's priced
much more than $45 USD.  Actually about $50 USD given the latest
devaluation of the mighty USD.

By the same token, a wood or onyx carving priced at $450 is
meant to convey 450 new pesos, or suggest $45 USD, but you can
often bargain it down to $20 USD or less.

Today is "at sea" day from Huku Hiva to Rangiroa.  A ONE-TANK dive
there tomorrow will cost about $7,000.  {-)

Oh... I am pining for margaritas... Today I shoveled my car out of a foot of
snow...

Have you been to the far side of the island? When I was in Coz, there was
this place called "Coconuts" that had the most amazing pina colada I've ever
tasted (made with pure coconut milk, vanilla and rum)

I seem to remember seeing one or two last March when I was there.
Regarding the old, "in case something happens",  you can always use

Yeah, she wanted to know if my phone would work.  I told her I wasn't
paying $2 a minute to roam.

Me?  I'm on vacation, dammit.  We've got good vets, that's all I'm
worried about.  Insurance covers everything else.
