So I learned to dive in Ko Tao Thailand 3 years ago, cost me about $200 CAN
to learn and pay about $10 CAN ($7.50 USD) per dive there. I have been back
twice as everywhere else I have been prices have been between $30 USD and
$50 USD per dive and if you dive 3-4 times a day for more than a few days it
is cheaper to pay the expensive airfare and get the cheap diving.

Anyone know of anywhere else that is even CLOSE to as cheap? Central America
preferred. Got a kid now and 3 weeks away for diving doesn't seem to fly
well with my partner :p (Although I have told her that she can go away
hiking for 3 weeks and I would have no problem taking care of the kid, it
still doesn't fly)

Bonaire for sure. USD $17.00 for two dives. Check it out here.

Utila, Honduras.  And I can guarantee you will enjoy the diving more.

Even at Roaton, I recently received a quote for a studio room with
kitchenette for $75 a night on diving days.  That covers 3 dives a day and a
night dive once a week, apparently.  Then on days I don't dive, the rate
dropped to $45 a night.  (And that's over Xmas/New Years) I think I'm going
to book it.

More details? Prices in USD or CAN?

Also, I would be there with the wife & kid, hospital close? Kid friendly?

Either Sand Dollar Condominiums in Bonaire, or Habitat Curacao had
excellent shore diving right from the resort.  So good, in fact, that
you could get a shore diving package only, only dive from the resort,
and have a great time.  That gives you almost unlimited diving.

I hear that there are other places on Bonaire like that, but I've only
been to Sand Dollar.

Another place you can probably do this in Sunset House in Grand
Cayman.  While the shore diving is just as convenient, it isn't as
nice.  Plus the navigation is tougher.

None of that has anything to do with his pursuit of cheap diving.

As for Koh Tao, yeah, the diving is inexpensive . . but then agai, you can
get what you pay for.

Every time I have gone I went out with "Big Blue" & "Scuba Junction"  great
operators, warm water, lots of marine life, wonderfully vicious triggers :-p
Seriously though, I have dove in Dahab, Cuba & Koh Tao, loved all of them,
Dahab was the best "in the water" experience as far as marine life goes but
as far as all around enjoyment (on the island, people there etc) Koh Tao
rocks, and if you can't get laid on Koh Tao, you can't get laid!

Geez, what's your definition of lots of marine life.  Lots of cucumbers,
lots of urchins, but lots of fish?

Oh, indeed, I must agree there.

I loved Koh Tao as a vacation island.  I was just very disappointed in most
of the diving there.

As for getting laid, I had a couple of opportunities come my way but I
turned them down.  I gather you didn't. ;^)

I'm also making the assumption that now that you are in a committed
relationship, you would turn down opportunities of that nature as well.

I guess I am just there when it is low season (actually, I KNOW I am always
there in Low Season, Mid-Sept every time) most dives was either just me and
the dive master or me and a buddy and dive master)

Depends on weather, I had some days that matched/beat best viz I got in
Dahab/Sharm, every dive was better than cuba viz

Not lots compared to the Red Sea, but pretty good, again, I think b/c I am
there during low season less fish are scared off

Again, I think you should probably try going during lower season, also, I
liked most of the people I met there more (especially Sharm which was full
of Euro Package Tourists)

Hey man, I'm still a virgin :p

Virgin dammit! I'm a virgin!

I was there in early October.  I was diving with New Way, but their boat
went out of service and we ended up on Ban's.  Still I often saw the Scuba
Junction boat and is was pretty filled up too.  In fact, one day I wanted to
dive with them but they were fully booked.
Even with New Way, there were 6 divers on their boat and we rarely had fewer
than that in our New Way groups, even after transferring over to the Ban
boats.

I'm sure it is dependent upon weather.  However, I have friends that go
there every year at various times of the year and they said what I
experienced was common to their experience as well.  Also the DM I was
diving with said that the viz was pretty normal.

I didn't think it had much to do with divers scaring the fish off.  I
thought it was all the fishing that takes place there.  One night while down
on the beach, I could see a glow all across the horizon of the water.  I
asked someone about it and they told me it was the lights from the fishing
boats.

I liked everyone I met there, the locals, the expats and the backpackers.  I
had a wonderful time.

You've got a 6 month old.  You are no virgin unless this is another
immaculate conception.  Besides that, are you saying you couldn't get laid
in Koh Tao? ;^)

There is only one virgin here at rec.scuba and that is me!  Just ask anyone.

Too lazy to impregnate a woman, so you hooked up with one who had
already calved?
