I was looking to do a one day oil rig dive off the gulf coast of
Texas.  One outfit that I found has a one day charter, leaving at
around 10am, with two dives and returning around 5pm.

This trip, which requires me to bring everything (including tanks,
weights, and my own lunch) is $185, plus they are expecting 15% in
tips according to the website.

Does this sound extremely high to anyone else, or am I just being
unrealistic in expecting this trip to be around $100 tops, with tanks
provided?

I would have to be pretty hard up to pay the kind of money.  I could
damn near get to Coz and back !

That seems awfully high. How far offshore are the oil rigs?

I think they're a few hours.  SoCal boats make longer trips for less money
and I assume the cost of living is higher out here.  For $185 you can
practically do an entire weekend trip to San Clemente Island including food
and 8 or so dives.

That's correct, they are about 2 hours.  Thanks for the opinions.  I
agree, way too much.

Why not ask around to find out why it is so high?  Is the boat
particularly expensive to run? (fuel, crew)  Do they have some permits
to get to be in the vicinity of the oil rigs?  Could you go and do
this on your own boat if you had one?
