Quick Dives From Orlando

Anyone have an idea were to dive within a quick drive from Orlando FL? I
will be spending a few weeks near Orlando in Early November.

I have been to West Palm & Boynton Beach but that's a 6 hour drive, isn't
it?

Orlando to Boynton Beach is about 3 hours. West Palm is closer. There's
some diving in the Ft. Pierce area and there are the central Florida springs
in the Ocala area.

For a unique dive, there's always Disney. Kind of pricey, but pretty
fun and very interesting. Lots of fish and some very strange looking
bipedal critters (who you are protected from by thick glass).

Cold water and plastic coral. Although it is interesting to do once.
It's better if you have one of those bipedal critters on the other
side of the glass to wave and take your picture.

There are charters off Daytona and Cocoa. A dive that is full of potentual.
A few years ago I saw a huge tuna inside the hull of the Domoclese. The vis
is always poor but in Nov. it should be at its best. If your into lobster,
there are whoppers in the ledges off Cocoa.

Lobsters are cool, Is the season open In Early November? I am allergic to
Maine & Rock (clawed) lobster, but Spiney Lobsters (broiled) don't seem to
bother me at all. (don't know the exact breed names)

Try the freshwater diving. Central Florida has the some of the best
rivers and springs you'll find.

Get a copy of Ned DeLoach's "Diving Guide to Underwater Florida"

Not to be missed: Crystal River (manatee should be in town by Nov)
also Rainbow River (drift dive), Ginnie Springs (and the rest of
the Sante Fe river area), Ocalla forest springs (many), and for
something different go to Weeki Wachee and dive with the mermaids.

OK snorkel, but not much for diving.

Very nice, but kind of shallow for diving. Then again, I dive the river. I
enjoy cruising along the bottom even when it's shallow.

You're allowed to dive with the mermaids? Now that sounds like fun. Last I
heard, Weeki Wachee was struggling financially. It would be a shame to see
the attraction close down. Maybe diving with the mermaids is just what it
takes to bring some life back to their finances.

The Daytona/New Smyrna area is not far from Orlando, and there are some
dive ops/shops there. If you google "Daytona diving" and "New Smyrna
diving" you'll get some hits.

Try Tampa in the river near there. Manatee river or something like that

Try Narcosis in Tarpon Springs, on the Gulf side. Gone out with them a
dozen times, good sea life, spearfishing etc. Capt Joyce and first mate
Scott
