Hi everyone,
Have any of you guys been on the Blackbeard Cruise around the Bahamas
recently. I've been on liveaboards of all classes before and would
like an honest opinion or the boat, accommodation and diving. I intend
to travel with my girlfriend in late May 04
Thanks in advance...

Do a Google Groups search on Blackbeard and you should get all kinds of
reviews.  In a nutshell, Blackbeards offers good diving for a low price.
The food is good, but not gormet.  The boats are safe and comfortable, but
not luxurious.  The trips are most often referred to as camping on the
water.  There's not a lot of personal space and not much privacy, but,
overall, the trips are a bargain.  If you have a romantic encounter in mind,
Blackbeard's may not be for you.  Try the Nekton Pilot instead.  On the
other hand, of you're outgoing, like camping and look forward to making
about 20 new friends, Blackbeard's is a good way to go.

The boat has nothing to do with whether or not you will make freinds
with the other passengers.

Unless Blackbeard's one of those bonding by sharing hardships thing
like basic military training.

Well if you need a specific boat to make freinds, at least there is
one out there for you.

Yep.  I'm lucky.  Don't worry.  Your ship will come in some day.

No, it's more like Woodstock- drunk, happy and naked, but less muddy.

Sounds a lot like my idea of a good time. Muddy is ok too. Even better with
cheese hats. Hey Salty, wanna go play in the mud?

LOL  I just saw this Rudes, so don't think that I am stalking you by
not replying right away, ok ??  <grin>  I'd love to go on a trip.
There is someone that you and I know who would like to get a group
trip up for Blackbeards but I doubt that everyone could agree on the
same week to go. You could get away with wearing your cheese hat on
the ship. I went twice, both times with hub and our usual group of
dive friends. We brought clothes and props to dress like pirates for a
'party' one night. One guy even brought a Jolly Roger flag that the
captain hoisted and we flew for the first few days... until someone on
one of the other Blackbeards boarded our ship and stole it while we
were in Bimini.

both my excellent social skills, and the environment of happy diving
related conversation lubricated by liquor and propelled by the semi
nudity and close quarters.

then again, it could have been the salt air.

Liveaboards of all classes?  Which ones?

I have been on Blackbeards twice but not recently. Unless things have
changed, it is like Lee said : camping on the water. The quarters were
very close but clean. Hub and I shared a cabin with a female friend on
the first trip. She had the top bunk and we had the bottom one. There
was little room for clothes and toiletries (but you don't need alot)
and I honestly don't think that the 3 of us could have stood up in the
cabin and had space to open the door. There are several bunks that are
situated in the galley area and afford privacy only by drawing a
curtain. It is a bit difficult to get changed if you are in one of
those bunks. There are 2 showers that are shared by all. I forget the
number of heads... maybe 2 or 3. The food is tasty and filling but not
fancy. If your girlfriend is going to be freaked out by the lack of
privacy and close quarters, then she won't enjoy this liveaboard. The
diving, as I recall, was fairly good... typical Bahamas area stuff.

That's where we were on our first trip, just forward of the galley.
Changing wasn't that big a deal, but waking up with the cook was not to our
liking.

That's where we were when Jayna hit the bunk above us with her head so hard
we figured Dixie, the single lady occupying that bed, probably had to climb
back in.  I was particularly good that night.

A lot depends on where you go.  We favor the Sea Explorer which, in the
past, tends to roam further than the other two boats.  The Morningstar and
the Pirate's Lady both used to stay close to Bimini when possible.  We
didn't.  They got a lot of nights in protected port and a chance to wander
the island.  We, generally, got only one night close to land.  On time it
was on Bimini, one time it was in Nassau, one time it was on Andros.  Guess
that means we went three times.

You woke up each morning at 5 am to the sound of banging pans and the
smell of bacon ??

Yes, I think you got to roam a good bit more than we did. We stayed
near Bimini.

Actually, the coffee came first.

Ummm, good, bad . . . hmmm.  This is where I should say that, when I'm bad,
I'm very good . . . well, I used to be.
