Got a question after I tell you a little bit about my dives.

We went there to get married so we didn't do a lot of diving as we had
family and friends there so only a few dives were done.

Shore dives, warm 80F, rough waters.  Water was clear approx 60 to 80 feet
visibility.  Near shore surge's were pretty powerful, but fun, what a work
out.  We dove on St Thomas, Limetree Bay.  About 100 yards out from shore is
a sunken navy barge, we snorkeled out to it and down we went.  Only about 60
feet to the bottom of the barge at the top of it, it's 25 feet or so.  Lots
of fish, couple of nurse sharks, two sting ray, few star fish, and the coral
was beautiful.   The barge is broke in half, apparently they sunk it there
on purpose.  Pretty simple dive as there were no currents or surges out
there.  Lot's of waves though, so snorkeling out was tiring.  We also did a
couple of dives along the cliffs of the bay on both sides, that's where the
surges were and they were a little tough, but I found them exciting.  Those
were really shallow dives like 8 feet to 25 feet.  As a newbie diver I had a
good time.  My husband found the cliff areas boring but he's been doing this
for years, this is all too new to me to be boring.

Ok here is my question,  right after my last dive my lungs were hurting like
I had inhaled something irritating.  I asked my husband if he had ever had
that experience and he had replied no.  Then the next day I had a horrible
chest cold, which today is a full blown upper repertory infection.  Could I
have gotten bad air?  It didn't task funny, nor did it smell unusual.  Since
I am so new at this, my hubby checked my air too and he didn't notice
anything.  We got the tanks from the same place and he's fine.  Could this
be just coincidence?  The last dive was the 19th.

I doubt it was contaminated air. I suspect you might have inhaled a bit
of seawater while snorkeling, which irritated your lungs (which then
became infected) or you may have gotten an infection from dirty rental
gear (assuming you used rental gear). "Bad air" usually means air
contaminated with carbon monoxide or particulates. Particulates *could*
cause an infection, but these usually just contaminate the inlet filter
of the first stage. Carbon monoxide poisoning usually doesn't cause
respiratory tract infections.

Thanks Alan,

Actually we brought our BCD's and Regulators with us, so no it was our gear,
only rented tanks, and yes I could have easily inhaled salt water.  Though
it must  have been very little as I didn't notice.  I suppose it was a
infection/virus I could have too and it just happen to finally hit me hard
after diving who knows.  I was just curious.

I would guess a virus which developed into a URI. Bummer that it had
to happen on your honeymoon AND dive trip.

BTW, congrats to the newlyweds.

Thanks Rick, yeah it was a bummer but it didn't really get bad until the
last day there, it did screw up diving on Friday though.  Oh well...

How had it been since your physical arrival off of the plane incoming to the
Islands, before you first noticed how you felt?  If it was 7-10 days, then
there's a reasonable chance that you caught a nasty bug while on the plane.

Are you really certain that you hadn't felt any other signs of illness prior
to your last dive that day?  Maybe you were a bit more tired than you
thought you should be?  Feeling a bit weak?  And then just ascribed the
earliest of symptoms to /nerves/excitement and/or other holiday activities?

I hope you have been to a doctor.  And congratulations on your wedding and
joining the SCUBA world.  I hope you aren't going to let this infection
negatively influence your decision to dive again in the future.

We arrived on the 13th the chest really bothering me was the morning of the
20th so I guess that would be exactly 7 days.  Also my son had strep throat
diagnosed 2/2/04 and started taking antibiotics.  So that about two and half
weeks earlier.  Could be I was fighting the virus from the beginning.

Absolutely no symptoms prior to the evening of the 19th after diving.  I
really wasn't paying any attention, with the wedding, the trip, being busy
on vacation, the excitement of diving etc, etc, etc.

I went to the minute clinic, where they diagnose things like strep throat
etc.  They said it was a upper repertory infection and I should go see my
doctor as they are not equipped to treat it safely.  Needless to say, I have
no insurance until July, so I'm self treating at home and hoping to shake
it.  I've not been sick in three years and I usually avoid doctors if I can.
If it's still as bad as it is on Thursday I'll go in, I'll usually try for
week to fight colds and coughs, after a week if the symptoms are the same or
worse I go it and pay out of pocket.

No this hasn't influenced my decision to dive again at all.  In fact even if
it had been bad air, I'd still dive, I love it.  A little chest infection
regardless of how I got it, isn't enough to scare me away.

Thanks for the congrats eventually I'll post picts

Yes, more likely.

Still, you'd think you might have noticed having a bit less energy.  I guess
that can be easily masked on holiday though.

Just be careful.  I ended up with a most serious case of pneumonia, that way
a number of years ago.  The clinic diagnosed bronchitis.  I kept going back
explaining how sick I was and that I'd had bronchitis enough times in the
past to be able to tell that this was different. They just kept sending me
back home with more pills that weren't strong enough.  I finally got into my
doctor's office and ended up in the hospital for 9 days and damn near died.
So, I don't know how much a doctor's visit costs down there (without
insurance) but if I were you, I'd be watching myself pretty carefully.
However much it costs to have that visit with the doc and get the right
prescription early enough, has got to be a lot cheaper than a hospital stay.
Just a couple of things to watch for, when you breath do you hear a sound
like that of celophane crackling in your chest? Do you wake up totally
soaked in sweat in the night? Are you coughing up really ugly looking stuff
with little red flecks in it?  If you've got any of that going on, don't
hesitate any longer.  If you've got all of that going on, get your butt to a
good doctor, immediately.

That's fantastic news!  Take care of yourself.

I'll look forward to seeing them.  You probably already know this but just
in case, here in Usenet, you need to put up your pictures somewhere else and
then just post the URL to that site for us.
