I had a couple small scuba items sent usps that apparantly disappeared
from my doorstep. I always realized this could happen when the drivers
leave a package without a signature, I was a always happy when my
packages
were waiting for me but the time has come where one has vanished. usps
says they left it at door and I never received it. They say contact
shipper
(leisure pro) to put a trace on it ? Why trace was my question, it was
left
at the door now it's gone, if i'm out just let me know. I know UPS
uses
a consent form you can sign for driver to leave package without
signature,
I've done this before. I always felt leaving a package on a doorstep
could
result in this. Fortunately it was under $100 and not a devastating
loss
but i really did want and need this stuff and to not have it after
paying
for it kinda sucks. In the future I will only purchase items from
those
who ship with a parcel service that requires a sig to leave package
without
me there. If anyone's offered at a discount price an oceanic depth
gauge and HP hose alert me immediately !

I may be wrong (haven't been yet today but it is early!), but I'd suspect
that since they left the package without your signature (and presumably
without a form to say you authorized delivery without a signature), that UPS
would be on the hook for replacement cost. In the future, even if you use
UPS, you can instruct the company you buy from to require the signature.

I believe that the package is automatically insured for $100 when you
ship it .

Actually it was the US Postal System that supposedly delivered it, I
actually prefer UPS or FEDEX (i know they use a form before they leave
package). I guess leisure pro would have to use the insurance to be
reimbursed if they resent my items (to an alternate address). I feel
bad for USPS and/or Leisure pro especially if it was "lifted" from my doorstep.
I dont live in bad neighborhood but things can happen. Either that or it was
left at the wrong doorstep and no one bothered to return to me and are still
staring at the gauge and hose wondering what they may use it for ! In the
future I will request when placing order that a sig be required for delivery,
unfortunately i'm not at home more than i'm at home, that's the catch. I
like the way FEDEX leaves a little form to sign and stick back on the door then
the package is there the next day, at least you know you should be expecting
it to be there the following day.

I find mail order more convenient but after this experience I may
return to the dive shops even though they can't begin to match the
selection i have from a 200 page catalog !

<snip ups stuff> since you're talking usps
question : was it insured ?
http://www.usps.com/receive/howtofileinsuranceclaims/welcome.htm
if it was left outside of box :
the sender might also have marked the shipment as "leave outside if
too big" in which case as long as you didn't tell them that, they
"might" be responsible for bypassing USPS rules

7.0 CARRIER RELEASE
7.1Parcels
An uninsured parcel may not be left in an unprotected place, such as a
porch or stairway, unless the addressee has filed a written order, or
the mailer has endorsed the parcel ?Carrier?Leave If No Response.? The
endorsement must appear directly below the return address as specified
in M012.
10.3 Parcel Delivery
An ordinary parcel too large to fit into a customer?s mailbox is not
left unless the customer has filed a written order with the postmaster
relieving the USPS and carriers of all responsibility in case of loss
or depredation of any such parcel left outside the box.
UPS has an automatic low level insurance of $50-100 (?)
USPS (with the exceptiomn of EXPRESS has optional insurance)
afaik : all shippers require the "trace" to be done from the shipper
side. Has to do with "who created the shipping agreement with the
shipper" = the person who placed it over the counter

At a glance it would seem to me that if the carrier took it upon
themselves in the absence of other instructions to leave the parcel in
an unsecured place, they're responsible. If the shipper instructed
them to do that, the shipper is responsible. If the purchaser
instructed them to leave it that way, then the purchaser is
responsible.

You mentioned two different carriers.
USPS is sort of unusual in what they will & won't leave on the
doorstep. I don't believe that they automatically insure to any given
dollar amount.
UPS will usually leave a delivery notice, assuming you don't live in a
driver release area. I'd suspect that your signature on the notice is
as good as signing in person. ie You assume responsibility. UPS
shipments are automatically insures to $100. I leave a note
indicating to deliver next door, where there's usually someone home.
BTW.... Leisurepro gives you choice of carriers.

I had a note on door for a few days but it looked kind of shoddy
from the street (no screen door, fl ya know !) so I tok it down.
I think the note may have to stay on the door which directs them
to leave inside the rear lanai, regrettably I didn't have the note
on the door for this delivery. I will select a different carrier next
time although I have no real problems with USPS but i know FEDEX will
not leave in the absence of any instruction to do so and then they
leave a thingy for you to sign so they can leave package the next day,
this seems to be the way to go because let's face it most of us WORK
although i'd like to hang around all day and wait for my package and
perhaps do some more bench testing on my 6CF pony bottle that WAS left
on my lanai !

I had a mask delivered (oceanmaster) I live in a very rural area. The
postman usually leaves the package (if small enough) attached to the
mailbox. This time he didn't - delivered to the house and left on the
door steps. Never got the package. Found it several days later all
over the yard - chewed up by my dogs. USPS basically said too bad - not
their fault. Oceanmaster replaced the mask for the cost of shipping -
nice job - something they didn't have to do. USPS should never have
left the package since it required a signature. The mailman thought he
was doing me a favor

Yeah Joe, it's kind of a catch 22....i want the package and have never
bitched before when it was waiting for me when I get home so I'm really not
looking for blame just tryin to see if i can my items replaced, I'm waiting
for response from leisure pro, they've been very good about other things
in the past. What kinda sucks is that if someone absconded it from my
porch USPS or Leisure Pro has to foot the bill, thieves SUCK !

Yeah - the need to be strung up by the balls and then monitor this news
group for six months!

I often ask the shipper to write on the package
"Delivery driver please leave on back steps"
It's really easy to walk down my driveway to my
back porch. UPS drivers do it every time. the
US Post Office drivers NEVER do it. I got two
packages yesterday and they shipped USPS and that
was on the package but it set on my front steps
all day long. Luckily no one "lifted" them.
(I didn't know the shipper was shipping USPS)
I guess the Post Office workers are just lazy.
They can't even seem to my mail all the way in
the mailbox and close the lid, which sucks on
rainy days.
But I've had good luck with the FedEx and UPS
drivers in them putting items on my back porch.
I used to work from home and also had asked them
verbally to put them on the back porch. Give them
a cold Coke on a hot day when they deliver to your
house and they appreciate it and remember it better
I've found. :-)
