I'm going to Aruba soon and plan to dive a few times. Wanted a cheap
scuba camera that will take decent pictures. Any ideas?
This "shield" looks promising, but I bet it doesn't produce enough
light and probably makes for extra distortion. What do you think?

See what Ikelite's offering these days, and Jason O'Rorke's pages.

Yeegh. Yeah, the idea works, but I'd have to say that the odds of a
random camera fitting ... and the shutter adaptor working ... aren't all
that great - this $60 system has the potential of having a high "getting
it just to work" hassle factor.
And even if it does work, you're shooting through the side of the
plastic - no attempt to have any sort of optical quality (eg, "lens
port"). Without a clear "do not touch here" lens port, you're going to
be forever trying to clean that surface, and try to remove accidental
scratches, etc.
For an 'inexpensive' UW camera budget, add up all of your expected costs
for your Aruba trip, then multiply by 5% to get a number. If you expect
to do two dive trips this year, use 10%. Otherwise, consider renting an
UW camera on site, or "get by" with one of the <10m snorkling systems,
including the disposables...afterall, nothing in the lowest price class
is going to have a strobe worth anything, so your best photos will be
<25ft deep anyway.

The light will have to come from your camera's internal flash and it
may or may not be sufficient. But for 60 bucks, it's worth a shot.
You did say you wanted cheap.

If at first you don't succeed, you run the risk of failure.

Don't expect the flash to be of any help underwater. It will only make your
pictures look like trash.
Use a high speed film and keep the flash off.
If you really want something decent, buy a digital camera and a housing for
it. You can do this for $300 - $400, and you'll have a digital camera to
photograph the rest of Aruba.
