I came to the scuba group for the first time today. The first topic (TMJ
or head pain while diving) degenerated into a discussion of suing one
another. The second topic was about Halliburton. The last topic I viewed
concerned whether or nor to take a photo in color or black and white.
Very little scuba discussions. To say the least, I am very disappointed.

Stick around.. I came for the scuba several years ago. learned a lot, (and
some scuba stuff too). Got a question? Ask, You'll get several answers, some
flames, and some replies that you won't understand. But the knowledge that
is available here is phenomenal, if you take the time to find it. As has
been said here before, think of this as a scuba bar. Many things are
discussed,  scuba being only a part of it.

You left out the one where somebody that just joined the group posted his
complaints about how everybody else posts to it.

You want to talk about scuba, talk.  You'll be surprised at the combined
wisdom that resides in this group.  You want to complain about how we handle
our group, and have no doubt, it is our group, I suggest you go looking for
somebody that cares.  You won't find them here.

Lesson #1 - do not expect sane, rational behaviour from someone who dives.

I wondered too.  As near as I can tell it is a group of people who know each
other at least well enougn to banter.  They choose sides.  Sometimes they
agree on a variety of "saving the world" subjects while sometimes they
disagree.  If you're on the other side of any particular arguement, you
disagree assertively without regard to the strength of your position.  The
berated are killed-off or die of natural causes.  After your dead you live
forever in the threads - wearing either a black or white hat.  New players
arrive on the scene and the action repeats.

I sometimes wonder if the posting is from an insomniac with multiple
personalities and way too much time on his/her hands.  To be sure, you won't
find much about SCUBA and apparently that's the way its always been.

I'm relatively new and quite dumbfounded by the goings on.  Currently
everyone is jumping on one "Salty".  I'm expecting this character will be
the next to perish.  There is a "Resident Lawyer" but he is not the one that
gives the legal opinions.  Legal opinions evolve from the masses.  One
"Nitespark" wrote a really nice trip report - so it appears he goes diving.
There are a whole bunch of others - I'm not sure how many - posting on 9/11,
Halliburton, Homeland Security, God, etc.  I'm thinking it takes a long time
to really know the characters in this Internet Soap Opera.  If you tune in
for a couple months you can see it morph.  Then come back maybe once a week
to follow your characters.

I see your handle.  Do you know anything about farming?

Here's how rs struck me when I first dropped in about 3 years ago to
find out something about cave diving. Some of the characters are still
around.

You misspelled "aggressively".

Actually, only three have died, and we only have confirmation on one of
them. The rest we beat regularly.

Salty has been around awhile. She's a nurse, and when she was in
training, she treated musket wounds. The lawyers here won't tell you
who they are, Nitespark is a female, We are God, security doesn't come
from the government, and don't get me started about the word
"homeland". You could end up smited.

And finally, I can name five divers here whose combined dives will
total more than the total at sea on most liveaboards.

We talk diving all the time.

Just not with newbies, and never with strokes.

See how easy it is, FarmerDave.  You rattle the cage bars just a little bit and
the denizens scurry about, howling, throwing feces, very similar to the noble
rock ape.

It is all quite humorous, even entertaining if you are having a boring day.

I always wondered if the apes weren't having a laff at our expense, at
the way we shy away whenever they make a threatening move toward us.
Watch them. It's interesting. The people on the outside are really
intimidated by the critters in the cage, and seem to forget that it's
merely noise and fury. One wonders who's really rattling what.   8)

Oh ya... the way they wiggle and squirm and backpedal and finally go
away.

Yup.

Well... here there's usually a fair amount of intelligence to back up
the noise and fury inside the cage.
