I've been considering putting together a website for rec.scubans to post
their dive reports and resort ratings.  In that line of thinking I have a
few questions.

Do you think it would be worth my time?
Would you use it?
Would you appreciate having it available for research in different areas?
If yes to the above questions, do you have any suggestions about features
you would like to see?

I plan to keep the site completely ad free and I will not be charging any
fees for usage.  I would offer it as a spam free, no cost site for all the
joy you guys bring me (and so I can see all the info myself).  I've also
considered adding a section for dive pictures, but I'm not sure how well
that would go over (financially on my part).

Any input ya'll would like to contribute would be appreciated since I am
doing this for you (us).

If you decide to do this -- let me know...

I'll definitely keep you informed.

The first step would be deciding exactly what I (we) want to put in it.
Step two would be deciding which database program to use
Step three would be building the database
Step four would be designing the site itself (my worst area IMO - I don't
really have the creativity to make it look nice).

You know... I think I've seen this site before... it's called
groups.google.com  rec.scuba.locations and rec.scuba

but yeah I'd use it if it's easier than google groups.

I was thinking about a more pointed set of information.  Something where you
can look up a resort and see what other rec.scubans have thought about a
particular resort in a very easy to deal with manner.  A little more
organized than what's available through groups.google.

I've also seen places where you can view different resorts and their ratings
(some better than others), but they are more geared towards regular
vacationers as opposed to the scuba aspects.

It would probably be a pretty good idea to include a dive operator section
as well... ahh the joys of the internet...

sounds a good idea... but rather than doing all the work, just put up a form
on the page to be filled out by the visitor to the site, all you'd need to
do then is proofread it and authorise the system to display it.

That's not quite what I had in mind either.  I'm talking about ratings, not
just reviews.  I'd like to see about 5 or 6 different areas of ratings in a
graphical format.  Have an overall score and then break it down into price,
food, amenities, etc...  Also, include options for would you go back again
(at the same price, at a higher price, only at a lower price, or not at
all).  Maybe have an entry for max you'd be willing to pay per night for
going again... something along those lines.  There'd also be an option for
leaving comments, which would be similar to what you're talking about.

You should try starting a chat room.  There's a real cool dude named Jack
who made a lot of friends doing this.  I'd ask his advice, haha.

Big Spring, eh?  Not that far from Tahoka where I have relatives.  Anyway,
to the point, how would this differ from what is already available, Chris,
such as Undercurrent's Chapbook?

I certainly appreciate Chris' enthusiasm but I'm not sure it will be worth
his effort.  As it is, the flow of trip reports is fairly slow and there
don't seem to be too many of us that stay at the same places (other than the
Cocoview coco-nuts, that is(g)).

Chris, how are you going to populate the info?  Do you envision some kind of
conversion project first, from the existing reports?  Imagine how long it
will take for enough new data to be input by posters, to make the project
worth your time and efforts?

Chris mentionned that it would be geared towards the needs of rec.scubans.
Existing websites do not deal with important issues such as:
Can you bring your gun?
How is the beer?
Does the DM brew decent coffee?
Can you get a trimix fill for your spare air?
...

Cheers,

I'm considering designing something similar to
http://www.resellerratings.com/seller2121.html only involving resorts / dive
operators / diving locations instead of resellers.  That might give you a
better idea of what I'm considering.
