My daughter and I will be in Monterey Bay in March and looking to do a
dive.

We are both novice divers, but did our cert dives up here in Alaska
last Feb so we are familiar with dry suits a bit.

Looking for a dive shop that'll rent us the gear and guide us through
the kelp forest. I'd prefer a shore dive as my daughter gets sea-sick
very quickly, but a short ride for a great dive would be great too.

Thanks.

Um, Scott, why are you suggesting they contact the Scripps Research Institute
(which is a biomedical research organization)? Scripps Institute of
Oceanography is at

http://sio.ucsd.edu/

but I'm not sure how much help they could give someone who wants to dive in
Monterey, CA.

3 months of 7 days a week working?

Complete brain fart.

When I was in Dego, we used to go to Monterey to dive (diving around Dego
sucks), and we had many contacts with divers who were students
and divers associated with Scripps.

I figured they could help him hook up with the goods...

Totally understood.

It still does (except for the wreck alley thing, and The Coronados) and
we still do.

Regrettably, probably not.

JOR is probably his best reference here.

I confess I've turned into a warm-watter wimp lately, but I've done quite a
few dives in Montery a few years back.

I thing Monterey Bay Dive Center will rent drysuits and give you a tour of
the area.
They're right across the street from a popular beginner & teaching dive site
called "Breakwater".

Once you've got your buancy undercontroll and are comfy with the gear, you
could do a lot worse than renting a couple of tanks and heading down to
Whaler's Cove
in Point Lobos State Park. (You'll need to make reservations in advance, and
bring a lunch. See
http://pt-lobos.parks.state.ca.us/scuba/scuba.shtml for details.

Captain Phil on the Cypress Sea is a local legend for his knowledge of the
area and competence as a diver. (and being a helluva a guy too.) Generally,
his boat will take you to experienced/adventerous sites. (aka Deep & Scary)
So be sure to ask for a beginner/intro charter when you go.

Hope that helps.

Hello,

I Would suggest that you give the folks at Monterey Dive Center a call. You
can schedule a tour through them. Their Web site is
www.montereyscubadiving.com.
The shop is right near a favorite dive spot at San Carlos Beach, the dive
site is call BreakWater.

Thanks, that's the information I was looking for.  We aren't
experienced enough yet to go off on our own, especially with rented
gear that we aren't familiar with.
