Since both of these towns are on the Caribbean Coast of Honduras I was
wondering if there is any decent diving in that vicinity (not the Bay
Islands) or anywhere else on the coast?

Dive shops/hotel recommendations are appreciated.

Thanks

Ping me offline and I will forward your message to a bud of mine who
just got back from there.

He has a bud who just got back from diving the Honduran coast?  Yeah,
right.  Why offline anyway, is it some sort of secret?  Shouldn't this
be the place to discuss the diving?  But I digress.

The problem with diving the Honduran coast is simply runoff.  It's a
muddy land with lots of rain and shallow water and that means the
water is simply too murky to support enjoyable diving and allow a
coral reef to flourish.  It's sort of like that diving off Puerto Rico
that I warned you about, but even worse.  Much worse.

I have a good buddy who spent plenty of mainland time in Honduras and
neighboring countries but didn't bother trying to get wet until he hit
Roatan.  He's an instructor and also teaches Spanish for a living,
shore dives in relative crappy areas like Malibu, so I know he would
have found a way to dive the Honduran mainland if it were at all
worthy.  Cheap beer and food, lots of fun, but don't expect to dive;
and if you do dive, don't expect good diving.

But there is an island hopper from La Ceiba to Roatan (and probably
Utila too) and it might be OK for same day diving provided they don't
cruise at a high altitude.  Please check and double-check if you go
that route.  At the least, it's probably very cheap when tickets are
purchased in Honduras and you can always find a place to crash and a
dive boat for some of the lowest "resort" prices in the universe if
you can get away for a day or two.

The ferry to Utila is cheaper ($16), its twice daily, and doesn't
involve riding in a 20 year old Czechoslovakian turbo prop with an axe
on the bulkhead. The one we rode was a 22 knot catamaran. The princess
was busy transporting coconut fronds. The whole trip was about an
hour. We saved the turbo prop for the ride home. Did I mention the
slick, bald tires?

The diving in Utila is really, really good. Much better than Roatan, I
thought. Not as much wall diving though. Of course whalesharks every
day could have influenced my opinion. Maybe it was the electric
torpedo ray or the Atlantic longarm (mimic) octopus or all the
frogfish and seahorses.

There's also a ferry to Roatan, so altitude induced DCI is not an
issue either way.

safe diving

I don't remember the bald tires, I was too busy puking.  Fortunately
they supply roomy barf bags on the flight.

Bah.  All I remember from my Roatan trip was the DM that puffed up the
puffer.  I'd never seen that in person before, and I had a hard time
convincing the dive shop group that I was with that puffing up puffers
really isn't such a cool thing to do no matter how cute the poor
little fish look when they're bloated with air.  Give me a politically
correct dive ship any day.

The same puffer thing happened to me about a year ago. Like the
backpacking credo, only leave your footprints, I thought it bad form to
stress the fish.

I don't participate when people treat the wildlife like some kind of
circus act, preferring to tell them what I think of their abusive
indulgence.

And I think they bloat themselves with water.

Cayos Cochinos is right off the coast near La Ceiba.  I've dove there and
can't say that I was impressed.
