CGuynn - 17 Sep 2008 22:01 GMT If I recall correctly, you are in the LA area. Is that correct?
I'm scheduled to be in San Jose/Fremont the week of October 6-12 and, if it isn't too far from you, I'd be willing to buy you a drink or two if you wanted to get together. Yeah, I know that 5 hours or so is a long drive, but I'm coming way more than halfway. :-)
Anyway, if you happen to be in the area, the offer stands. If not, well, stop being a loser.

The only issue is what's happening with Janna's medical issues at the time. It now turns out she needs surgery, so tomorrow morning she gets a plate and 6 screws in the ankle. She needs to get reopened and have a screw removed a couple weeks later. By 10/6 she should be OK to make the drive with me; otherwise, I'm not sure how mobile she'll be to get around on her own if I were to take off for a few days. Janna is far more liberal than me, so if I feel like taking a break and sipping my beer in between berating you for your warped views, she'll take over and harrass you until you turn blue.
Plus you'll be in ultraliberal NoCal and if I need more reinforcements, all I have to do is wave my trampled-on flag. Ya sure you don't wanna stay in safe Texas?
Now if you're not a loser, I'll even double-dare you to make a dive. I've never gotten wet up thar in them frigid Monterey waters, but I can tell you that San Jose is a heck of a lot closer to decent kelp diving than anywhere in Texas and it's not gonna get much warmer than in October. I could probably even come up with dive gear that would fit you and save on rental costs. What say you try to work in enough time for a little dip in the pond? Figure an hour each way of drive time, an hour for the dive, and an hour for good measure (or beer), and I only need a half-day to make you a real man. Game or loser? You take your pick.

I hope it all works out okay. Both for her sake and so I can finally meet you and raise my count of rec.scubans I've met all the way to two.
> Janna is far more liberal than me, so if I feel like taking a break > and sipping my beer in between berating you for your warped views, > she'll take over and harrass you until you turn blue. Sounds like good times.
I'm pretty closed minded though, so it's quite possible she'll be berating me until *she* turns blue. On the other hand, I'm not as conservative as you might imagine (and as I've probably portrayed myself in this group). I do have a gun and I do support smaller government, but I'm not entirely opposed to letting a woman make up her own mind about abortion. That's gotta be good for something.
> Plus you'll be in ultraliberal NoCal and if I need more > reinforcements, all I have to do is wave my trampled-on flag. Ya sure > you don't wanna stay in safe Texas? Not really an option. I've got a new job that requires some training for some specialized services we're about to start offering. The boss came in and told me I needed to go. I argued with him for a while, but in the end he's just more stubborn than me. Plus, he controls the paycheck.

Since it's just a double-dare, I guess I could turn it down and still save some face.
Honestly, I'll look into my schedule and see if I can squeeze in a day to try out my new wetsuit in a real diving situation (i.e. not in a swimming pool). It's just a 1 mil though. Do you think that will be enough? I'm pretty comfortable in shorts and a t-shirt down to about 70 for an hour or so.
Greg Mossman - 18 Sep 2008 17:14 GMT > I hope it all works out okay. Both for her sake and so I can finally > meet you and raise my count of rec.scubans I've met all the way to > two. We'll find out more today. Otherwise, all I know is we have a follow- up appointment scheduled for next week, then she has to go in at some point to have a screw removed and get sewn up again. Then there's the issue of her sitting in a car for 5-6 hours, which might not be too comfortable. Maybe I'll fly up.

Ya know, plenty of people pay good money to spend their vacations here. It could be worse, they could have sent you to a swampy hellhole like Florida.

Do you think that will be > enough? I'm pretty comfortable in shorts and a t-shirt down to about > 70 for an hour or so.- Hide quoted text - Ho ho ho. Even the hairiest gas man I know would have an issue doing one of his lake dives in Monterey without a nice cozy wetsuit. 1mm? Not a chance, unless you've had recent Navy SEAL training. The warmest it gets is mid-50s and there's a real big difference between 70 and mid-50s, especially when you're completely submerged.
I've done 52 in a 5mm farmer john. A bit chilled by the third dive of the day, but it was certainly doable and not even too uncomfortable. On the other hand, I've dove in the low 60s in T-shirt and shorts, dipping down into a thermocline easily in the 50s (not long enough to let my computer register the temp!) and can tell you that it's damn hard to keep a reg in your mouth when your teeth start chattering uncontrollably. Monterey diving is difficult enough that it's nice to have all your motor control and mental faculties in case you need them and cold can certainly numb body and and mind to dangerous levels.
But we could always rent you a suit for the price of a decent pint and I think you'd find it worth the few bucks. Or I have various "hyperstretch" suit components in XXL that you could layer over the 1mm and maybe get enough for comfort.
I'll write back this afternoon after the cutting is done and I've figured out my calendar. If I end up flying, I definitely won't be diving since I'll have to fly right back the next day and don't want to lug gear or risk DCS.

Well, it doesn't look like I'll have a lot of time for diving on this particular trip. I should have plenty of time for a drink or six though.
Greg Mossman - 29 Sep 2008 17:27 GMT > Well, it doesn't look like I'll have a lot of time for diving on this > particular trip. I should have plenty of time for a drink or six > though. I'm having major Google issues. Barely let me post at all last night before telling me I was at my "limit" whatever that is. Tried sending you a PM but not sure if it made it. Here's what I wrote:
Janna's not the most independent paraplegic I've ever seen, so it's gonna be difficult. Either I drive up with her or I fly (or drive) up by myself and she has to get by on her own. Right now, I'm not too confident about the latter option. The former might be a go if I can time it right, but the big Hispanic foods trade show in L.A. is at the end of your time frame and I really should be attending that for at least a day. I'd make the six-hour drive north, have beer with you etc., and drive the six-hour drive back the next day, but that's a lot of driving. I might be able to pull two nights which would make it a lot easier, but then Janna will worry about the cats left behind and probably try to invoke the pet sitter.
So do this for me please, let me know via e-mail where you're staying and what nights are best for you to take off, and I'll try to see if I can work a mini-roadtrip into my plans whereby we can have drinks, I can hook up with my old buddies, and make sure Janna isn't too uncomfortable during 12 hours of road travel.

I was just informed today that I might either be going 1 week later or that I might end up in Boston instead.
I'm a little frustrated today. I should know more tomorrow, but (to bring this back to scuba) I would suggest not holding your breath.

That's only a 3 hour drive for me and one I was planning on doing next month anyway.

Apparently, Dell decided to change the training dates and we had old information concerning the previous trip plans. This time, I'm scheduled to be in Sunny California (Fremont/San Jose) for training October 13-17. If you can make it, I'd love to meet you. If not, I'm sure there will be other chances.
Oh yeah, and I hope Janna gets well.

Most likely not, since I have a trade show Oct 13-14, and a 2-day CLE (my compliance is due 2/09, so I have to catch up) on Employment Law Oct 24-25 that I'm going to use as a mini-holiday in Downtown L.A., so working another overnighter in between those dates will be tough even if Janna weren't crippled. On the other hand, I've been thinking about blowing off the trade show, and maybe a six-hour drive wouldn't be so bad if I could spend a couple nights up that way. Let me think.
On the other hand, if you're not any further from Houston than I am from San Jose, we'll be in your "neighborhood" the night on December 9 on the way to Cozumel. I'm so sick of red-eyes, I figured a hotel night in Houston couldn't be worse. Maybe Grumman could join us.
> Oh yeah, and I hope Janna gets well. Thanks. With luck, you can tell her in person and even sign her pink cast.

This time, I'm [quoted text clipped - 9 lines] > about blowing off the trade show, and maybe a six-hour drive wouldn't > be so bad if I could spend a couple nights up that way. Let me think. Naw, definitely not. My truck is going into the shop today since it wobbles side-to-side whenever I hit a bump. A bit scary, especially at freeway speeds when you wonder if it's gonna flip over. I've put it off for a while, but it's gotten worse and I most certainly wouldn't want to drive it 300+ miles to San Jose. Not sure if I'll have it back by early next week, and I'm not making the drive in Janna's itty bitty car.
And I also keep forgetting, probably intentionally, that my tax return (on extension) is due 10/15. I got most of it done before 4/15 when I sent in a payment, but the way I procrastinate, the return will likely be mailed on Wednesday right before 5 p.m. Unless my truck is miraculously healed, and I miraculously finish my tax return early, I'll be staying at home. Besides, I have a payroll that I need to do the night of the 16th to pay my employees on the 17th. It's just a bad time overall.

Service guy thought he could have my truck back today, but I'll believe it when I see it. If it is ready today, or even by Friday, and I can get my taxes done by Saturday, perhaps it's a go after all. I'd either be there Monday or Tuesday, after visiting with a cousin in Santa Rosa on Sunday or Monday. I'd kind of like to take a long drive around now. It would be good for the soul. Nice and peaceful between SoCal and NoCal on I-5, except for the part with the smelly cows. I'll update as soon as I hear when I get my truck.

OK, truck is supposed to be ready tomorrow afternoon. I put a call into the petsitter and left a message for my cousin. If they're a go, I'm a going. Are you still going? If so, e-mail me where you're staying Monday and Tuesday and I'll try to get a place nearby or even there if you had the foresight enough to choose a Starwood affiliate.
Oh, and the pet sitter just called back and says she can keep our cats alive for the entire three days we'd be gone. Just waiting on my cousin, and still have to get my truck back tomorrow, but I'm almost there.

Any idea if there are any good sushi bars in the area? Don't worry, I won't even attempt to find a decent BBQ joint.

Wheelchair accessible, open Monday night, and even takes reservations. Wanna meet there? We'll miss 99-cent sake night, but you can always go back. Are you going to have a car?

Let me know how the sushi is.

And now she's called me back to say she's maybe changing her mind. 50/50. She'll know by Friday. I really did want to go, so I guess I'll give her till Friday and then I'll let you know for sure on Friday. Meanwhile I'll make a reservation at the sushi bar just in case. What time do you want to eat? Janna's not drinking more than a sip or two of anything, so if you need a DD, we can pick you up.

As nice a guy as Chris may be, I'm not making the 14-hour round trip just to have sushi with him. Nor was I planning on making the trip at this time to meet up with my cousin. But putting the two together has a syngergistic effect. Chris sounds like he's set now, so the weak link is my cousin and she is a major flip-flopper that's for sure. I'm just in the middle, so I'm taking absolutely no position right now. If tomorrow she says it's a go, I go. If not, not.
But on the subject of flip-flopping, wasn't McCain recently against offshore drilling before he now fervently supports it? Wasn't he for financial deregulation before he now fervently supports regulation? Against the Bush tax cuts before he now fervently supports even more? Now I've heard he's considering changing his name to Cain McJohn.

I can't wait for this crap to be over so the airwaves will clean up.
I am of the opinion that no matter who is president - nothing is going to change - Washington and our state legislatures or so screwed up nothing will ever change

Of course McCain flip-flops. All politicians who've been around a long time flip-flop. Times change, situations change, McCain changes.
Obama is a community organizer, and community organizers don't flip-flop. In the several months he's been in national politics, he's toed the party line, as is expected of every newbie.
But now that he's assumed the mantle of party leader, he's learning to flip-flop. After months of fomenting panic, he said this morning to relax, the economy is fundamentally sound.
And he's changing his middle name to Joe.

Looks like you got some good weather. Enjoy. Try to get into San Francisco for a day or night at least, if you've never been. It's worth the drive or there's a commuter train you can take. Dungeness crab season just opened and they sell them at Fisherman's Wharf ready for eating.

Sounds like that'll definitely be worth the trip.
Are there any decent beaches in that area, or is it all rocky cliffs?
Greg Mossman - 12 Oct 2008 17:30 GMT > Are there any decent beaches in that area, or is it all rocky cliffs?- Hide quoted text - There's plenty of beach, though "decent" is a relative term depending on whether you're from beachless West Texas or if you grew up walking distance from the beach in Santa Monica. I have to admit that I've personally never spent time on any beaches in the city, but Ocean Beach runs along the entire west side and it looks from the pics like there's lots of sand and no cliffs:

China Beach is supposed to be prettier but smaller, and Baker Beach has naked people.

It was what those of us with a sense of humor like to refer to as a joke.

I'll be staying at the W Silicon Valley in Newark on Monday, getting there late morning or early afternoon. Where's your seminar?

Where's your seminar? It's right around the corner from "the W" on Dumbarton Circle (across the highway... 84?). You're actually staying closer to it than I am.
