Mario - 09 Jan 2004 19:58 GMT Hello,
Are there any digital cameras for underwater photography ? how many meters or feet they can reach? they have connection for external stronger flash ? what is the lense aperture?
Please tell me what are good models of digital cameras for underwater photography with and without underwater casing I mean no need of extra housing for underwater are there any? how deep they can go ?
what about with housing digital cameras? which ones are considered best?
thanks,
Mario

A housed camera is probably the best solution in terms of versatility and bang for the buck. So, first pick out a small handful of digicams that you like, and then start investigating whether or not they can be used in UW housings.

andy w - 10 Jan 2004 01:38 GMT One or two places seem to be doing the housing for the Olympus Mju cameras (300 and 400) for about ?60 - so you could probably get a 3mp camera and housing for ?300 or so.

Cheapest I have seen it is £95.
I'm pretty tempted with this set up.

I just got a 400 and a housing from Adorama.com. There are a number of places that carry it - I just did a google search on the part number of the housing (PT016), and got all kinds of hits from all over the world. My local dive shop was carring it as well - they were offering the combination of the 300 + housing for about 600$, but I did a lot better going online.
Will be testing it in a pool on Wed, and trying it out in the ocean in a week or so. FWIW, there is a rebate if you purchase by something like the 17th.
As you might expect, there are lots of adjustments you can make on a digital camera. I found a website from Canon in Japan (site is in English), that has some interesting suggestions that are specifically related to underwater digital photography: http://web.canon.jp/Imaging/uwphoto/page/01-e.html.

The Oly C4040 and C5050 are pretty well supported. But you can find Tetra and Ikelite cases for a lot of cameras. Add on flash units and such, and you could be looking at $1500, maybe, not including the price of whatever camera.
It's expensive.

I just got the same housing and we're headed to Cozumel in February. Any advice on using the camera underwater? What settings do you use? Anything special with the housing? Did you pop for an external strobe?

I hadn't thought about that, but I guess the auto WB isn't set up to handle UW shots. Did you set the WB by going into the One Touch WB screen? Or do you have a preset for UW photography?
Can't wait to get this baby in the water!

David Gintz \(formerly newdiver2@aol.com\) - 10 Jan 2004 18:18 GMT I've got a Canon PowerShot S230 (3.2 MP) with a Canon housing. It's made it down to 108' without leaking (although rated for 100'). I don't (yet) have an external strobe and probably won't get one. (The great thing about this camera is that I can leave it in my BC pocket and only take it out if I want to shoot. Hence, I'm not committed to carrying the whole setup with strobes. A tradeoff of course but what isn't?)
As for settings, I let the camera do it's thing, leaving the WB setting (and the other settings) on automatic.
Images frequently look much too green or blue but I then process the images through Photoshop Elements (or Photoshop) and colors can be corrected trivially. This post-processsing step might not be so necessary if I were lighting it better (with external strobes) but the convenience of not having the big-armed lights (and their inherent expense) is (at least at this point) worth it to me.
Of course, I bought the camera for skiing and other above-the-water activities and only got into the underwater end of things by accident.
Good luck.

I had a Canon Powershot G2 digital camera which I wanted to use for underwater. in November, I got an Ikelite housing, DS100/sensor strobe package, and fast-charger for the strobe for about $1400 with shipping. I've put about 50 dives on it so far and have been very happy with it. It was expensive, but now that I have it, the cost-per-use will eventually make it seem not so outrageous. (:
mark - 11 Jan 2004 14:52 GMT We just got a Sea&Sea DX3000G, which is rated to 165 Ft, and used it on several dives in the Keys recently.
Without the external strobe and on sale it ran about $650. Not cheap but a great package.

An comparatively inexpensive system is the Sealife Reefmaster. Here are some pictures I took with mine last week (look for the ones marked "new"): http://www.pathcom.com/~bracuk/underwater/index.htm
Most of the other pages indicate what camera was used to take the photograph.
I have the 1.3 megapixel version of this camera. They now have a 3.2 megapixel version. One of the other divers on the boat last week was using one, without a strobe. I was impressed with her results. Must have a faster lens than mine, because I could not have achieved those results without a strobe.
As far as how far an underwater camera can reach, it depends on your depth, the amount of ambient light, the type of lens, and so on and so forth.

But Sea & Sea's UW camera is not alive nor well -- specifically, my latest MX-10 (2002) which lasted all of ONE liveaboard dive trip, within 60 days of the purchase, where MOISTURE (no water leak, mind you) resulted in damage that required (according to the authorized service center in the USA) $270 USD to repair, which cost about the same or more than buying a new one. It was obviously a MANUFACTURING defect.
I've used an MX-10 from 1992 to 2001 when the camera was stolen with the rest of my luggage -- so it wasn't exactly a case of a newbie user of the MX-10 not knowing how to grease the seal or take care of the camera properly.
All this was carefully explained to the "technician" at the service center, to no avail.
So, I told him to smash the camera with the biggest HAMMER he could find, and not bother to mail me back that POS.
I don't know if he followed my instructions, but I did not get the camera back.
I now have a nearly new (used one week, the same week of the MX-10) strobe that I'll sell for $20 (or offer) postage paid by purchaser.
Matt, you know me.
Send a copy of this to Mr. Yamaguchi. Perhaps he SHOULD know how his "technician" in the USA was handling his customers and his manufacturing defects.

I use a Nikon Coolpix 4300 with a Fantasea CP4 housing with attached Sea&Sea 20mm Wide conversion lens. In addition I light things up with an Epoque ES 150 DS. The system works well and if bought from the right sources can cost less then $1000.

What they show is that in good conditions (none to few particles in the water) you get acceptable results, [and have fun] and that is good.
They also show that {images/Small_Key_Largo_7_03/100_1477.jpg}{mages/Small_Key_Largo_7_03/10 0_1490.jpg} it is not a good setup in less than ideal conditions.
