Bones and Bonaire

Second time now we've spent hours of a vacation at the local hospital.

On Monday, we were doing our second dive of the day at Old Blue.  Nice
dive, found 3 slender filefish right at the end.  We emerged from the
sea and as usual, I helped Janna get her footing through the rocks and
tricky slipperly ironshore ledge.  It's not that I'm more nimble
footed, but I'm a bit more able to bear the weight of the tank and 12
lbs of weights on my back than she is.

Made it past the tricky stuff, next was just a simple few steps up a
little slope covered with dead staghorn coral.  This is where it got
nasty.  Janna's right foot slipped a bit, got her unsteady, and the
whole package went falling.  Worse, she sort of twisted as she went
down.  I was left with a screaming Janna on the ground, me not knowing
whether she hit her head or injured her knee or ankle.  We soon found
out it was the third option, the ankle.

Any movement caused more screaming.  Clearly it was going to be an
adventure getting her up  the slope and into the truck.  I got her
gear and mine loaded, then pondered whether I should leave her and try
for help at the hospital, a 45 minute drive away, or wait for someone
to come by and render some assistance.  Did I mention that we were the
only ones at the dive site?  That's one of the great things about
Bonaire, having dive sites to yourself, but it can be a bit lonely
when things hit the fan.

Finally some other people showed up and seeing Janna writhing in agony
on the beach quickly ran over to help.  Three people made it a lot
easier to get her loaded in the back seat of the truck, and away I
went to the hospital, hearing screams everytime I went over a pothole.

Dealing with hospitals in your own country can be daunting enough, but
let me tell you that it really sucks when your in a foreign country,
even one as "first world" as Bonaire.  Heck, they don't even have
signs in English.  What's this world coming to?

The hospital told me to take her across the street to the clinic.  I
got them to bring out a wheelchair, and we went to wait for the doc.
Doc asked "does this hurt" several times, each time getting a loud
scream in return.  No translation required.

He sent us back to the hospital to get X-rays.  They looked fine to
me, but doc saw a little hairline crack.  Not enough to separate the
bones, thankfully, but a crack nonetheless.  Unfortunately the
"surgeon" who could cast her ankle was out and they needed the
swelling to go down anyway.  He sent me over to the medical supply
store to buy her some crutches, then wrapped her ankle for a little
support.

Now the fun part.  We were staying at Den Laman, which only has units
on the second and third floors.  No elevator.  Doc said stairs were
absolutely out of the question.  Great.

So now it's after 6 p.m. and I needed to find a ground floor room
ASAP.  Unfortunately most of the hotel offices close around 6 p.m., so
my choices were limited to the larger resorts.  Plus I wanted a room
with TV and A/C in the same place.  Lots of places on the island only
A/C the bedroom and put the TV in the living room.  Since Janna's
vacation was henceforth going to be limited to TV and reading, I
figured I could at least try for comfort.

Plaza is too damn big.  They had an open ground floor room literally a
half-mile from the parking lot.  Harbor Village had a large group
arriving Thursday that had requested all the ground floor rooms and I
didn't feel like having to move yet again later in the week.  They
suggested Divi, but I have a grudge against Divi after losing too much
in their Casino.  I also have issues with Buddy from a former visit.
So I went to my old friend Captain Don's, site of my first trip to the
island.  It's a bit rustic, but they were able to get us in a deluxe
ocean view hotel room sort of accomodation that had exactly what we
wanted: good A/C and a TV.

Unfortunately when we tried to get Janna to the room, which was a bit
of a walk from the parking lot, we found out that she's not too good
on crutches.  Late at night by this point, I had a crying woman on my
hands and I was feeling pretty helpless.  Every time she moved her
ankle a bit, she'd cry out in pain.

For some reason, docs here just do not give anything for pain.  I had
read something on Bonairetalk a while back about someone with a really
bad tooth problem that would assuredly have gotten him some Vicodin
back home.  Not in Bonaire.  Heck, in the U.S., you can get a doc to
prescribe you Vicodin for stubbing your toe.  Not in Bonaire.  Not for
a broken ankle, at least.

So I figured I could motivate her to crawl on her hands and knees.  I
started crawling, said "follow me".  But after a few steps, her knees
hurt.  Tried putting her booties under her knees, but that didn't
help.

Fortunately we were situated right at the loading/trash area for the
restaurant and I had spotted a dolly there.  I got someone from the
restaurant and he came out with a cart that worked even better.
Loaded Janna on the cart and delivered our room service to the room.
I got some pizzas, two very large beers, and a bottle of wine, and we
called it a night.

Next morning it was time to see the "surgeon" for the cast.  We didn't
have an appointment, were just told to come in the next day and that
the doc should get in around 8.  We slept in a bit, then I ran into
town to the medical supply place to rent a wheelchair.  I wasn't about
to borrow the room service cart for the entire trip and crutches just
suck and would likely cause her to fall and break something else.

Medical supply place did have wheelchairs for rent, but they had to
put one together that had the foot rests.  They told me to come back
in a hour.  So I decided to take a drive back up to Old Blue to see if
I could find what happened to her mask.  When I finally was able to
unload our dive gear, we realized that her prescription mask didn't
make it back with us.  Even worse, this was her backup prescription
mask since the other one was dropped at Karpata the day before and
shattered (that one was my fault :).  No mask.  Losing a prescription
mask and a backup prescription mask on the same trip must be some kind
of record.

I made it back to the medical supply place after an hour only to be
told that the wheelchair I wanted had a flat tire and they had sent it
out to get fixed.  I waited around a while, then they told me they
would deliver it to Capt. Don's within the hour.  Sure enough, they
came with the wheelchair, but had forgotten the footrests.  She went
back for the footrests and 20 minutes later, we were on our way to the
hospital for a cast.

When we got to the hospital, we were told that the surgeon had just
left.  At that point, I sort of started to lose it.  I asked her,
quite firmly, to please call the doctor in because I didn't want her
ankle to get any worse and we would have been there earlier if it
wasn't for the craziness of trying to get the damn wheelchair, and
what kind of doc only works for 3 hours a day?

I still have some lawyer in me, and managed to convince her to page
the doc.  He came in, looked at the X-rays, explained that he couldn't
do a permanent cast because of the upcoming flying, that if there was
swelling in flight, we needed a cast that we could cut off.  I then
held Janna down while she screamed through his setting the cast, he
gave us a nice note to explain to the airlines that she was capable of
flying without undue risk, and we were finally done.  She'll follow up
with her doc when we get home, probably to get a more permanent cast
that she can actually walk on, or get surgery if the bone isn't
healing as nicely as it should.  Fun, fun.

Wheelchair people are going out of town on Friday, so they want me to
return the wheelchair by Friday at noon if we want our deposit back.
Hah.  I'll try to explain to them that I need it through Saturday
morning, that they can pick it up at Capt. Don's, and if we don't get
our deposit back, I'll try to get it through insurance.

Of course the Den Laman people were less than gracious.  We had
prepaid and that was it.  So I'm typing this from my "office" at Den
Laman right now and I'm keeping my camera here in case I actually
decide to finally go diving again this trip.  Having to pay for a
second hotel room cost me another $1,000, and it will be real fun
trying to convince the insurance (trip insurance and/or DAN preferred
plan) that it was medically necessary to get a ground floor hotel
room.  But like I said, I still have a bit of lawyer left in me.  I'll
fully document the stairs-only situation at Den Laman.

I'll also eventually take up with the Den Laman owners how shitty is
to insist on keeping our money for a place we can't use, especially
since they're slow right now and it's not like they had to turn away
anyone for lack of available rooms.  Sure, we have a non-refundable
prepaid room, but can't they have a heart?  That's not the sort of
treatment that will ever bring me back here, so they're going to lose
out on my future business as well as the future business of everyone
else that I can dissuade from going there thanks to the power of the
internet.  But I'll save that for later.  Right now, I'm trying to
salvage what's left of our "vacation".

Played some volleyball yesterday with the staff at Habitat, one of the
Harley shop guys, and Moogie, the only live musician on the island.
That was fun.  I'm still going to try to get in a couple of dives
before we leave, at least to get some much needed practice with the
105mm lens and try out my new extended viewfinder, but with the luck
I've been having on this trip, I'm likely to flood it.

That's all for now.  Got to bring lunch to a disabled woman, then
decide if I want to get my camera wet or not.

And they call this paradise.

Sorry to hear about you and Janna's misfortune. Over Labor Day, I had a
somewhat different experience in San Carlos, Mexico.

Three minutes into the first dive, on the first day, I cut my little
finger on my left hand. It was fileted from the palm of the hand to the
first joint. Fat and the tendon were visible(my background is in
medicine.) Back to the boat, I washed it out with betadine, dressed it
with the help of an EMT from Nogales (Border Patrol!), put my gloves on
and finished the dive. Cleaned it again and redressed between dives,
and after the last dive. Arrived in the clinic in San Carlos about 7
hours after the injury. They cleaned it up, and told me the doctor was
on his way. Doctor arrived in shorts and a t-shirt about 15 minutes
later. He spoke perfect English. He announced his training was in
GERIATRICS (bad), but he did most of the stitching for trauma in San
Carlos. Next, he brought out his own, German surgical instruments
(good!) To make a long story short, he did a beautiful job verify the
functionality of the finger (nerves, tendon) and anesthetizing,
cleaning and sewing the wound.  He also gave me the OK to dive the next
two days, as long as I cleaned and re-dressed the wound between dives.
We had to go to the pharmacy to get the tetanus vaccine and Keflex, and
then came back so an EMT could give me the shot. Total elapsed time was
1 1/2 hours! The bill for the clinic was a dontation (we gave them
$80). I went back to see the doc Monday after the last dive, and
everything was OK. I am 11 days post injury, and we still look good.
Doctors bill was $188. I will take the stitches out on Saturday.

I have to say, I was very pleasantly surprised!

Not one of your hugs, she has enough broken bones already!

Thanks, big guy, that means a lot especially coming from you given our
recent animosity.  I just wish you (or strongman JH) had been there at
the beach to help me get her to the truck!  You could have lifted her
with one hand and carried her gear with the other.

This week is sh.t and now we're looking at Ike trying to mess up our
travel back home, but we're trying to keep as positive a face as we
can on things.  Like I told HH, I'll still try to get wet again before
we leave since this was supposed to be a dive trip after all, and life
doesn't suck completely when there's great island food and drinks and
views to enjoy.  Fortunately the weather has been good, so at least
there's something.

It turns out the Capt. Don's staff and Moogie, the island musician,
have a pick-up volleyball game on Tuesdays and Thursdays right in
front of our new ground floor digs.  I looked mopey enough watching
them that they invited me to join in, so I made some new friends and
got to take out my frustrations on a little white ball.  We have a
rematch scheduled for tomorrow.  Again, not my usual dive trip, but it
doesn't do any good to keep crying.

At least she didn't dive long enough to get bitten by any eels!

For me, time spent with my SO is one of the few things that eclipses
diving.

Salvage the rest of the week, sneak in some dives, and don't forget you
still have good company in a good location.

Definitly, and I would have had some fitting pills with me

I would have taken care of the prescription mask, bc I know
what they cost. ;-)

The nice thing about Dutch is that ankle is enkel, pronounced
"ankle".  So at least there was no confusion of body parts on the
person who accompanies Greg.

It's difficult to keep track of this for people especially when you add in
the fact that people who thought they were just living together might end
up in fact being married because of the various "common law marriage" rules
in the state that they live in... Easier to just refer to all the wives /
girlfriends as "significant others"...

Thanks, Art.  It looks to be a very minor fracture, i.e. not requiring
surgery to fix it, but the doc says those kind actually require a
longer recuperation.  I'm hoping she'll be good to go for our Cozumel
trip in December, but maybe three months isn't long enough after a
fracture to go diving due to the healed bone providing a site for
bubble genesis?  I'd hate for her to get DCS too - that's the one dive
malady she hasn't suffered yet!

Well, in at least once case I'm familiar with, yes, some nondisplaced
fractures can take a very long time to heal. Tina suffered a
nondisplaced fracture of the distal fibula in her right leg early in
November 2006. (Distal = far end, at the bottom of the fibula near the
ankle joint, right at the end of the bone). It was barely visible in
X-rays and CT scans, so hard to see that she was initially diagnosed
with a sprain. But it was very painful, and remained painful long enough
to get the doctors to have another look late in December. That's when
they finally saw the fracture and began treating it as such. It was June
2007 before Tina could ride her bike or take long walks without pain.

I'm not a doctor, but common sense tells me that the key to a quick
recovery is to make sure the fracture is completely stabilized (nothing
can move) until the bone is sufficiently healed. In Tina's case, because
it was diagnosed as a sprain, she wasn't put into a stabilizing cast.
She was in a soft cast and told she could walk on it for almost two
months before the doctors realized what was really going on. Since
Janna's injury is known to be a fracture, she's probably much better
off.

I don't know about DCI issues. That would be a great question for DAN.

Maybe.  We arrive Dec 10 at noon, depart on Dec 16 afternoon, five 2-
tank dive days with Blue XTSea, staying at Cozumel Palace (formerly
PLG).  Yeah, it's all inclusive, but I've already eaten at all the

I've got Paul Gauguin next July.  Sails out of Papeete.

It appears Janna won't need a second surgery as the doc didn't need to
stabilize the syndesmotic ligament with a removable screw after all.
Which means the cast is off in six weeks, then she'll be facing six
weeks of PT, interrupted by a week in the sun at Cozumel Palace while
I go diving.  She's dove Cozumel enough so she won't be missing out on
too much.  I just hope she'll be OK to dive by July, as she's never
dove French Polynesia and that can be quite awesome if the big
pelagics happen by.

Thanks.  She's feeling a lot better now, save for the occasional
muscle spasm.  The real fun will come when we try to board the plane.
As modern as Bonaire is in many ways, they still don't have jetways at
the airplane.  Doc guessed they'd lift her up on the elevator that
brings up the food cart.

Of course with Ike on his way to Houston, I might be stranded here for
another week and finally get some well-needed vacation and diving.

Plan is to get my camera completely set up tonight, finally, then do
three shallow solo dives tomorrow on Bari Reef to practice shooting
gobies and blennies with the 105.  Friday is my pre-flight day, so no
diving then.  That will bring my dives to a whopping 8 for this trip.
What that will end up costing per dive, I don't wanna know.  I thought
this shore diving was supposed to be cheap!

> Guess I told ya that you shoulda gone for the Beer trip instead... :-)

Speaking of which, Lover's Ice Cream by Sand Dollar now has a large
selection of Belgians, about 12 or 15.  I'm still working on the rest
of a bottle of Columbian rum, however, and won't likely get to the
beers.  I'm back at Den Laman right now, my "office", so I'll probably
run downstairs for Happy Hour in a bit and try some Old Speckled Hen.
See if it tastes like MG motor oil or not.  Then I'll run back to
Capt. Don's to pick up Janna and bring her back here so we can try
Kirk's new restaurant, the Sunset Grill.  Tonight is Lobster Night.

Lover's, BTW, is quite an interesting ice cream shop.  Along with
their ice cream, which is quite good, they sell the aforementioned
Belgian beers, Kosher hot dogs (Hebrew National, natch), and
cigarettes.

Well, a dozen is better than none :-)

I've gotten a preliminary beer count & photography set up online now,
at URL:

<http://www.photo-hh.com/Europe/Pages/2008_Belgium.html>

The beer variety count was at least 35.  It could have been a bit
higher, but we had some duplicates, plus we were there to do other
tourist-touring things as well.

and Tripel Karmeliet.  I think I'll have the Draak first.

This is to celebrate my upgrade to first class for the long haul to
Newark tomorrow morning.

Of course our remaining legs that go through Houston will have to be
rescheduled yet again as they've already canceled flights earlier on
Sunday there.  The CO website is still sticking firm to a Friday/
Saturday only closure, but I don't see how the airline and airport
employees can get to work with the highways in 6 feet of water unless
they have a boat or Grumman flies them in.

Hey Grumman, can you pick me up in Newark and fly me to Houston?  I'll
supply the beer.

I'll take a look right away.  Are you back home yet?  We might be
overnighting in your fair city if Houston doesn't reopen and they
don't have room on the EWR-LAX nonstop.  At this point, I just want to
get off the damn island.  Never thought I'd prefer New Jersey to
Bonaire, but there are some advantages to being back in the ADA-
approved states when you've got a disabled SO to care for.

I wish I could  be there to meet you, but I'm on the GB tomorrow. Sorry.
Maybe next time.

Good choices.  Both are served in a tulip-shaped glass, so you should
pour to build a head.  Leave the last 1/4" in the bottle, as this is
the yeast (decide if you want to have it later).

IMO, the Karmeliet might be better to go first, as it is more of a
classic blonde-colored 'Tripel', whereas while the Draak is darker and
has more substance.

Particularly for the Draak, have some cheese with it, as it is a
10.5%.

We're home.  If you get stuck, give a call if the two of you need
something.

Too late.  Did it in reverse.  You were right.   And we didn't have
any cheese handy.  But we're going home, finally.  I ain't
complaining.

Thanks, but I think we finally figured it out.

Houston did end up planning to close all Sunday, even though my
particular flight there still hasn't indicated "canceled".  But I was
proactive this time.  After a half-hour on the phone with CO (at $1.35/
min!), and being told we could fly on Delta on Monday in coach and
split up (which we could have done today if I had wanted to accept
that), I finally hit a soft spot and she managed to "find
something".

Something means only a 5 hour layover in EWR (probably a half-hour by
the time we clear customs & recheck bags), then we fly CO to
Minneapolis, then NW to LAX, then I'll get a Supershuttle home and get
my truck from ONT in the morning or bribe the Supershuttle driver to
take us directly to the ONT parking lot (they won't book it that way,
but they're amazingly susceptible to cheap bribes).  Best of all, we
scored 1A&B for the latter two legs, so Janna should be comfy and so
should I.  Whew!

Sorry to hear about the drama. Hope Janna is feeling better soon.

Wow... And I thought that the way you were going to make this trip
memorable was by flirting with Ike on your flight back... I have to say
though Greg, you sure do go that extra mile to make for a memorable dive
trip... Of course, Janna's going to blame you for everthing...

sh.t man.  You guys have got to quit taking vacations.  And so do I,
although my August ER visit wasn't even on vacation, yet.

Friday I'll get one of the orthopods I work with to write you a
"medically neccessary" order for a first floor room.  Hmm, Austin doc,
Bonaire injury.  Might not look right to some cany assed types.

I hope she's feeling well in a bit.  I know how it feels to spend most
of your vacation in pain and not being able to do what you wanted to
do.  Give her a kiss for me.

Hey, you know I'm competitive.  Stop getting yourself injured and I'll
stop making Janna try to keep up with you.

Yeah, probably won't work.  We're still working on getting reimbursed
for the eel injury.  DAN is great for questions, but their insurance
is ridiculously hard to satisfy.

One day I'll experience it too, but so far all I know is how it feels
to spend most of your vacation with someone else in pain.  At least
she likes watching TV.  If it were me, I'd have gone batshit since I
hate TV.  On the other hand, I just discovered that Capt. Don's has
free wifi.  That's a different story!

Familial kiss on the cheek rendered.  I'll save the tongue for when
she knows you better.

Story snipped, best wishes for a speedy recovery inserted.

Tell Janna to keep the vino bottle close and the glass closer.

Normally I end up drinking most of the wine.  But at dinner tonight,
we had to order an extra bottle.  She's in no pain now!

Damn, that really sucks. Please pass along our wishes for a quick
recovery. Maybe you can entertain her by trying to put lipstick on a
donkey.

Yeah...but even if he did...he would still have a donkey.

Hmm.  That would be entertaining, but unfortunately donkeys are
protected here and I don't think the local authorities would
appreciate it.

Now lipstick on an iguana would look pretty cool.  Maybe I'll try
that.  The nice thing about Capt. Don's is that there's a lot more
wildlife here, especially if you consider a gazillion stray cats
wildlife.  Since Janna's a cat lover, she's in heaven.  Priority for
her, before worrying about medical needs, was making sure I got a bag
of cat food for the hungry hordes.  Waitress at lunch gave her lots of
romaine trimmings to feed the iggies.  I think she might be happier
injured and animal feeding than going diving.  At least she's not
feeding the eels finger food!

Best wishes for a speedy recovery for Janna, Greg.  At least it wasn't Palau...
Although either of you would have had excellent care there. I met a guy at
the PPR who got injured his 2nd of 7 days there. Thankfully, the one and only
orthopod happened to be "available" that day and set the fracture right.. He just
had to finish the rest of his vac. on the sidelines.

Here's my URL to look at my website while you enjoy that free wifi.  :-)

So we got home, after 11.5 hours of air time, 6+ hours of airport
time, and an hour-long van shuttle

Got an appointment with an orthopedic place today, they took new
Xrays, and now it looks like Janna needs the works: ankle plate and
six screws.  Surgery is Thursday a.m.  We go for blood work tomorrow,
then the cut and glue on Thursday.  Fun fun fun.
