Clearly some confusion about the pronoun -- who's "he" as in "What you mean, 'we', white man?" Tonto to Lone Ranger ;-)

Think of me as the quiet guy at the bar who's trying to suggest to people that, whatever the discussion, it's probably not worth getting tossed out on the street over it. (Yeah, I know the analogy breaks down since nobody gets thrown out here, but it's close.)

A few didn't quite reach that point, but withdrew anyway. One is believed to have committed suicide.

For whatever reason, I never thought of his disappearance as being self-destructive in that particular fashion. Perhaps I missed something after the fact, but I'm of the opinion that he had gone out for a dive for the contest, but never came back due to something unplanned and/or poor judgement (eg, got caught by weather, etc). Occam's Razor.

Yes. As I recall, the suicide idea came from those that investigated his death. It surprised me quite a bit until I heard of other issues including a history of depression on top of employment and financial issues. Not having known him personally, it's a coin toss for me whether it was deliberate, semi deliberate or an accident or, for that matter, whether it was a convenient way to disappear and start over.

In other words, you had no more basis to speak of Black's death as a suicide than I did of the Wave Dancer's hurricane party. In other words, you're yet again proven a hypocrite.

Just like those Americans on the GBR ;-) made into whatever that movie was

I never figured anyone that narcissistic for it, but there was information afterwards about big trouble at work (he was an opthalmic surgeon).
But two things-
He was quoted as having made statements elsewhere in Usenet about being able to dissapear and not be caught, which would require extensive preparation.
And he was the dipshit that bragged about doing semi-deep solo diving on the Great Lakes without fins (because he forgot to bring them).
But it was odd that no scrap of the boat was ever found.

Perhaps a lesson learned. Those that are narcissistic tend to rely rather heavily on their self image and their ability to convice themselves that all rational others share it. Take that away from them and they tend to go way down, really quickly.

I was about to say that maybe he did intentionally dissapear and was now back as dechucka, but not even Black was that bad.

When you mentioned prattling onward mindlessly pointless, I assumed you were talking about STUPID David Frank.
Sorry.

Other than that one guy we killed, people mostly stick here by their level of self esteem.
The exceptions are obvious, of course.

I'm admittedly rather new here, but I was using USENET nearly 20 years ago in various other groups. I can remember the days before AOL got USENET access and the level of literacy and almost courtly manners that prevailed. (awww s**t I'm getting nostalgic, a sure sign of aging and creeping senescence. :-( )
Can we just leave it at that? OK?

OK? I can see that.
But I will note, when I got here (on AOL) in '98, that there was a much higher level of silly dungeon&dragons bullshit and anonymity from posers ( "Kaptain Kourageous The Cyber General" types) who came to the internet to try and be what they couldn't in real life.
I tossed all that bullshit, gleefully breaking as many "Usenettiquette" rules as I found inconvenient to expressing myself, and organized the first newsgroup dives where we could meet and hang out.
What ever else it is, this is the most functional and expressive newsgroup I've ever seen (28,000 posts later).
I can assure you, I've met almost everyone you've seen post recently, and they all are what they seem like IRL.
