I wonder why such a useful item went out of vogue?

because if it followed the current reccomendations of put nothing in your

LOL . . .good point.  That said, I was thinking more along the lines of the
taste of ear wax in one's mouth whilst picking one's teeth, but then as we
all know . . . there's no accounting for taste.

Perhaps I should tell you what my Pembroke Ruby enjoys doing, but
maybe not.  It involves ears.

Keys are handier and opened up paper clips are cheaper.

Still used by various cultures...

As Lee pointed out though, they were replaced by two different modern
inventions -- keys and paper clips...
