Bonaire trip report

Rod - 20 Apr 2008 15:44 GMT We left Philly on Air Jamaica At 7 AM. Go to Mobay and then left for Curacao, Air ganja no longer flies into Bonaire, took a 15 minute DAE flight into Bonaire. Buddy Dive forgot to pick us up, so I called them, they just said take a cab and we will pay for it. They did. Was very surprised to find they had been upgrading the rooms on the Lion dive side, new furniture and AC in the living room and bed room. I did my check out dive Friday am and was ready to go. The rest of the group I was with came in on Saturday. And we started diving together on Sunday. I did boat dives until then The week started off on a Klein Bonaire dive named hands off, 70 feet for 56 minutes, say a seahorse, eagle rays and turtles on the same dive, and that's the way the week went.
Best dive of the trip: A two tank dive at Ol Blue. 200 feet + visibility, Coral in great shape. The fish life was astounding. On the first dive I did 76 feet for 62 minutes and I don't think I moved more than 100 yards from where I went down the wall.
Worst dive of the trip: I read the local dive rag in my room one night and they talked about a wreck they had allow to sink in 55 feet of water off the Harbor Marina in 2003. LOL allowed to sink, that piece of crap wouldn't have stayed dry on land, it looked like it had been blown up. There was no upper structure or decking and only ½ the hull was left. But hey, since we had to swim against the current to get to it we had a free ride home from it. Only time I have ever seen any current on Bonaire
On a scale of 1 to 10 I rate the Buddy Dive trip a 9, it losses 1 point because it is such a pain to get there. As I say every time I get home from there, "I gotta go back, it is like going home".

Glad to hear you enjoyed your vacation. We were going to go to Bonaire a year or so ago but were deterred by the travel. There didn't seem to be any easy ways to get there.

Leave NJ at 11 PM get to Bonaire at 6 am. I think that is Delta and I believe Continnental is also trying to pick up Air Jamaca's openings.

Grumman-581 - 20 Apr 2008 22:36 GMT > It's not the drive that's the problem, it's the ferry that takes forever.. Since it's only 20 miles from the mainland, I'm surprised there is not a ferry that goes there... Turns out that it is about 3300 miles here to there in my plane if I don't fly over water for any great distance... That's a 22-26 hour flight even without counting all the stops (5-10, depending upon load in aircraft) for fuel in my plane... Nawh, I think I'll pass on that... I'll wait for the movie...

IIRC, there are boats that bring over goods (fresh fruit, etc) from the mainland. Of course, the question then becomes one of where there might be a decent international airport on the mainland of South America to consider flying into.
In looking at Google Maps, it looks like its roughly 50 miles from the Venezuela mainland out to Bonaire, but neither Puerta Zamuro nor El Manglar look to be that much of a town. Chichiniviche (~80 miles?) has a couple of boat piers, but still no bvious sign of an airport anywhere. There's an airstrip Caracas, but you're now lookign at roughly a 150 mile boat ride ... just as easy to take another flight.

I'm flying with Delta now. I think I'll miss the free champagne and actual meals, not peanuts, that AJ gave.

From Philly, we took USair to Aruba and then the lttle airplane to Bonaire. I think that Continental has 1 flight a week from Newark that is direct.

We really like the diving and restaurants there, but had tanks stolen from our truck while we were diving. I didn't bother to tell the dive shop about it and didn't have to pay for the tanks, but it did cause some inconvenience as we had to go back to the shop for more tanks.

I wonder what a thief would do with stolen tanks in Bonaire?

Tools, ciggie lighters and womens underware, but not tanks
