Hi all - Its been a loooong time for a trip down to the islands and I'm
rusty on the whole money drill.  Any recent travellors have any tips on what
cash you brought, cards, travellers checks? What budget you lived by etc?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I only brought about $50 in cash.  I used my debit / credit card to
pay for things and to withdraw more cash from ATM's in the other
country(s).  I haven't used traveler's checks in about 15 yrs but was
with a couple who used them on our last trip.  She got them from the
bank and signed for them initially and so she had to be present in the
flesh to sign for them whenever he wanted to use them on the trip.
Seemed like a hassle.  I'm not sure why you're asking  "what budget
you lived by..".   My budget has nothing to do with your budget.
Don't spend more than you can afford and you should be fine.

Currently the exchange rate is 1 USD = 10.5749 MXN... If you don't have
the pesos, most places will be happy to go with a 1 to 10 conversion for
you... Some places will take USD and use whatever they consider the
current exchange rate and give you your change in pesos... I never
exchange money before going down there... I just take some cash in USD and
wing it once I get down there... If I need some more cash, I just use the
ATM at the bank and withdraw in pesos...

Pretty much agree.  Big purchases we used the card.  Citi actually
gave us a decent exchange rate and only gouged us a little on the
foreign exchange fee.  We didn't use our ATM card.  When we went to
Oz, our credit union gave us the daily close rate and charged us $1,
plus a $1 for non network terminal.  And the ATM company charged us
$1AUS.

You can easily spot the banks.  They have Federales standing in front
of them with L1s, REAL assault rifles.

Mostly we used dollars, preferably as smal as possible so as to avoid
getting much change, which is all in pesos.

The taxis are purportedly priced in pesos, but the drivers know the
rate by heart in dollars.  Of course, "the rate" has a scandlous
exchange rate.

Here's a little warning, however.   $ can be USD or pesos.  Inquire.
We saw an internet cafe that posted a Sunday special of $1/min!!!  Of
course, after three seconds of actual thought (ie, four minutes with
beer), I realized it was in pesos.

Don't buy tanzinite.  That's all I'm going to say.

I don't recall seeing any Federales in front of the Banamex.

I seem to remember a few military types around that area due to the Air
Force and Navy base nearby...
