Pretty much agree. Big purchases we used the card. Citi actually
gave us a decent exchange rate and only gouged us a little on the
foreign exchange fee. We didn't use our ATM card. When we went to
Oz, our credit union gave us the daily close rate and charged us $1,
plus a $1 for non network terminal. And the ATM company charged us
$1AUS.
You can easily spot the banks. They have Federales standing in front
of them with L1s, REAL assault rifles.
Mostly we used dollars, preferably as smal as possible so as to avoid
getting much change, which is all in pesos.
The taxis are purportedly priced in pesos, but the drivers know the
rate by heart in dollars. Of course, "the rate" has a scandlous
exchange rate.
Here's a little warning, however. $ can be USD or pesos. Inquire.
We saw an internet cafe that posted a Sunday special of $1/min!!! Of
course, after three seconds of actual thought (ie, four minutes with
beer), I realized it was in pesos.
Don't buy tanzinite. That's all I'm going to say.

I don't recall seeing any Federales in front of the Banamex.

I seem to remember a few military types around that area due to the Air
Force and Navy base nearby...
