Thanks to all who lent advice on my diving nervousness-the trip was
amazing! Unfortunatally, i got a very bad sinus infection the last few
days of the trip, and missed my final dives( Six feet under, and it
felt like someone was shoving my dive knife into my forehead). Does
anyone have an advice when preping for future dives as to how i can
avoid the problem before it starts, or any on site solutions?
PS- anyone else recently diving in the bahamas or surrounding areas
notice the great increase in lion fish? I did three dives and saw
upwards of 15....

TAke a Sudafed PE when you get up on a dive day. It may be mating
season, good thing you didn't look like a lioness fish

and hope it doesn't wear off or become less effective when diving. Reverse
squeezes are awful. Another problem with Sudafed is that it dries out the
sinuses and tends to exacerbate the problem and can cause a rebound
congestion if taken for more than a couple of days

You lucky bastard seeing all those lion fish, they are beautiful. I assume
what you call lion fish are either the same of closely related to the ones
we get on the GBR ( I have seems them as far South as Hawks Nest N of
Newcastle ) http://www.amonline.net.au/FISHES/fishfacts/fish/pvolitans.htm.
Definitely no touchy though

Yup, those are the Lion Fish...They are pretty, but not so great when
you are watching 15 of your friends learning to dive, and one of them
almost smack into one....Same goes for fast river currents when they
float in the current.
If you want to see them, contact small hope bay lodge and go
diving off andros, you're bound to see a few.

OK I know it only wikipedia but supposedly they are not native to the
Caribbean or the Eastern Atlantic but may have got there by the home
aquarium trade

Sudafed PE sucks.  Blind studies showed that it took about 10% longer
to acheive what the user believed to be full efficeicy, lasted about
80% as long and had a much quicker drop.  Get the real stuff.  But
don't take more than a 12 hour and don't take it if you don't need it.
Which means don't take a second dose in the evening if you're not
taking a night dive.

One lion fish is a great increase over the norm, which is none. The lion
fish is not native to the Atlantic. Opinion runs heavily toward population
by release of fish purchased for aquariums. I don't know what the second
most popular guess is.

Regarding sinus issues, my wife's ENT suggests Zephryx or Zephrex. We're not
sure of the spelling.

Zyrtex?  That's a long term use med for treatment of allergic
symptoms.

One year, we took some Sudafed and a couple of snorts of Afrin on our
way from Kahana down to Kiehei.  About half way there, Carol looks at
me and says "you know, I feel kind of invincible".

See Big Trouble in Little China.

Nope. It's definitely pronounced the way I spelled it. It's a perscription,
non drowsey decongestant. It worked well for her. She started taking it a
couple of days before any dive trip and continued with a maintenance dose
during the trip.

Prescription Zephrex is basically OTC pseudoephedrine plus OTC
guaifenesin.  Pseudoephedrine is better known as Sudafed and
guaifenesin is the expectorant found in Robitussin.

they are talking Zyrtec ( I assume ) which is Johnson and Johnson's
cetirizine, an anti histamine not a decongestant. Claimed not to be sedating
but look at the PI and don't get on the piss with it.

Guaifensin.  Ugh.  Lots of people are saying steer clear of it and
some companies have dropped it altogether.  Including, I think, the
makers of Robitussin.

My pysch says not to use it, so I don't.

My ENT recommends Mucinex and Afrin.  You must be careful, however, that
anything you take does not wear off during the dive or you may be in for a
reverse squeeze.  Also, Afrin taken over a relatively short period can lead
to a rebound effect that actually blocks your sinuses.  Many divers do it.
Just don't overdo it.
