I've got a friend who is looking for some diving in a reasonably close
proximity to West Texas (outside of Balmorhea) and he was asking me about
this location.  IIRC, there's at least one person who's been diving in
Travis and, also IIRC, they've said that the vis is basically zero.  I just
wanted to verify that information (or get the correct information) before
advising my friend.  Any help out there?

Nawh, the vis is not zero... The Brazos River around here is zero...
Travis is clear water compared to it...

It's dark, so bring a light... It's cold at depth, so a 3mm is minimum
past 60 ft or so... Dillon dives up there quite a bit, IIRC... After the
dive, stop by the Salt Lick for dinner...

The viz can be okay there, but I wouldn't expect more than about 15-20
feet on a good day.  There are a lot of students, though, so the water
murks up pretty quickly on the weekends.

I thought I had heard that they were trying to sell it and it was
about to close, but the website is still active.  Has anyone else
heard anything about that?

Right now, viz is around 30 ft down to about 50.  Of course, temps are
in the upper 50s down to about 20.  Then it drops 8 degrees or so.

Windy Point private (technically, Barstow's) is for sale.  So far, two
sales have fallen through and he may or may not have dropped the
price.  Or pulled it entirely.

Windy Point public (Bob Wentz park) is run by Travis County.  Windy
Point is split between the two.

Driving down Commanche Trail from the Oasis, Hippy Hollow will be on
your left about 3 miles before you hit Bob and Barstow.  Look for the
signs to Bob and Barstow will be the dusty parking lot basically
straight ahead.

Remember to take your beer for the Salt Lick.  Lots of it on weekends,
as the wait can be as much as 2 hours.  Forget the Oasis.  Sunset very
nice, ritas very nice, but a little pricey, food horrid.

We also go to Mansfield.  Currently meeting there Wednesday evenings,
although we will be have a mudbug boil on the 20th.

To get to the Salt Lick, turn right off Commanche Trail on to 620 and
drive until you run out of road and it hits 71.  Turn left on 71. When
it hits 290 at the Y in Oak Hill, head west (right) on 290 until you
hit 1826 (look for the sign for Camp Ben McCoullgh, there's also a
u-rob-em type gas station on your right.  Or just look for the signs
to the hospital, Seton Southwest).  Hang a left and drive miles and
miles until you hit Camp Ben McCoullgh.  The Lick will be on your
right and can (does) sneak up on you.  Be a little cautious with your
speed, as traffic may back up.  Don't be embarrased, lots of people
have to turn around.

If you do hit Austin, let me know.  Grummy seems to know where I live,
but the Google GPS coords are off by about two houses, stupic Google.

Popeye will tell you, we know some good eating.

Thanks for that... If I make it down, I'll try to remember to give you a
heads up before I make the trip.
