If nothing else, they have longevity.  I remember Skin Diver ads from
back in the 80s.  They also appear to be on the ocean side of the
island, shortening the old boat rides.

I remember using them back in the 80s.  Looking at their website
today, it looks like they might also have the biggest cattle car
diveboat of all of the operations?

There's at least 2 other Dive Ops that operate out of this same
marina.

The one that some of us used back in Dec 2006 was Scuba-Do.  A small
outfit thats been around for years (also) and pretty much was running
a six-pack (10 divers max); IIRC, our price was around $75 (+nitrox),
which puts them on a par with Slate's website's prices.

These look pretty normal to me.

Thanks for the tip about Scuba Do.  They didn't show up in my original
search.

Ah, that looks a bit more normal ... I had only noticed their
prominant photo of the "Eagle" on their main homepage, which looks to
be around a 90 footer.

Their website seemed to be offline this AM; hopefully its better now.

Tell 'em that the guys who tried to eat all of their Dark Chocolate
recommended them :-)

We've been out with Spencer a few times. Here's my impression:

The shop is nice and convenient to the boat. They bank nitrox, which makes
getting quick fills a lot easier. The boats are in good shape and the
captains and mates are competent.

Spencer is the guy that used to feed barracuda by placing bait in his mouth.
There was a very large green moray that used to come out to visit divers at
one of the sites he uses. I'm not sure whether any of this goes on any more,
given Florida's ban on fish feeding, but in our experience, trips with
Slate's operation that he, personally, was on, were fun. Those that he was
not on weren't. Spencer's trips tended to be to the nearest sites rather
than the best sites. We were quite unimpressed with the quality of most of
the dives we did with them. We've since moved on to other operators for our
reef diving.  For wreck diving, including the Spiegle Grove, he's fine.

I've also used Scuba Do, Silent World and American.  Reef trips with Scuba
Do were better than the ones I did with Spencer, the ones I did with
American were perhaps a bit better. At least one I did with Silent World was
so shallow and uninteresting that both Curtis and I commented that we would
rather have spent out time on land socializing. That's a heck of a
statement, particularly when the trip was free.  Again, any of them are fine
for diving wrecks in the area.
