I am sorry to report that one of the "good guys," that being Crystal Clear Charters out of
KL has ceased operations and gone out of business. It's parent company Cay Clubs, Inc.
the owners of several condo units and some hotels in the area (Bayside Resort in KL as
well) is also in severe financial straights. My LDS used them this past summer to charter
their annual KL trip, as Dan Bracuk will attest to, having joined my group on one of them.
At present, my LDS has made alternate operations but sadly, has had to move their base
out of KL for the summer of 2008 but to, of all places, Ft Lauderdale. The venue is now
the "Sands Harbor Hotel & Marina" and the LDS there is "South Florida Diving Headquarters."
Don't know either.
I haven't decided yet if I will do this or not - it may be academic as things are tighening at
work even still..... but we'll see. Nonetheless, the liveaboard trip on the Sun Dancer II for
Memorial Day weekend is "on" and will stay that way (I'm committed to it now anyway).
BTW, for our SoFl'ians, did anyone get slammed by the "massive power hit?" I have yet to
call Dad and see if he's OK.

I've stayed at Sands Harbor several times now and liked it fine. I
went there for the convenience. Two dive boats in the marina at the
hotel, and the hotel gives substantial discounts if you use one of
those boats. I dove with ScubaTyme, which I liked fine. Good crew,
very attentive to divers' skills and safety factors. If you have the
whole boat, you can tell them what you want to do.
When I have gone there I've not bothered renting a car, since the boat
is right there, and there are plenty of places to eat in easy walking
distance. It's not actually in Ft.Lauderdale, but in Pompano Beach.
Diving is probably better than KL. I think the reefs are in better
shape, and there are a good number of interesting wrecks.
The hotel is no five star, but it's roomy enough and convenient, and
inexpensive. Nice pool bar/grill for lunch or for after dive
libations. Right on the ICW so you can drool over the yachts.
Hope you enjoy it.

Everything I have read and heard about mainland Florida diving is that
it's all current diving but not necessarily drift diving. Is that
what you experienced?

Yes, there's current, sometimes enough to drift in. ScubaTyme always
does drift dives except on the wrecks, but sometimes there isn't
enough current to drift. It also helps to have buddies who know how to
drift dive. I did one dive with a guy who felt he had to help the
current....

I had a momentary flicker of the lights. I suspect that the gods of power
grids know that I have a 7.5 KW generator in the garage.

I've lost power about 7 times today (so far)... I figure it has something
to do with the high winds we've been having today... Clear skies, no
significant weather associated with it... Sometimes it would come back on
just long enough for me to reboot my computers and reset my clocks...
Sometimes not even that long... It's quite irritating when you get your
machine rebooted and as soon as you login and get back to where you were
before the power went out, the power goes out yet again... I really should
get a couple of UPSs for those machines...

How very unfortunate. I liked that shop.
Anybody know any other shops on the ocean side of Key Largo or
Tavernier?
