you order something from your LDS and it takes forever for them to get it.
I'm planning a dive soon, and I'm still waiting for some fins and a
flashlight that was ordered a month ago. I can get them mail order in a
couple of days.

Tell them.
Say you want to do business with them, you want to buy gear from them but if
they can't or won't provide it well .............. . Gear in my experience
is the icing on the cake for most LDS while fills, dives, bookings etc is
their bread and butter, they probably need you more than you need them
Is this the only LDS in your area? Loyalty is good but if they eventually
don't supply the service you want well pto.

It doesn't take them forever to get it.
They get a discount if their orders are a certain size, so they hold the
order till it fattens.
If I was you, I'd make them lend you the stuff from their rental, or tell
them you'll have to cancel the order.
I support my LDS, but I rarely order stuff through them.

I'm surprised the shop didn't offer this.

What do you do when:
An Underwater Kinetics dive light is $199 at your local dive shop and an
on-line dive shop (which also has a major store presence in the Capital
City) offers that light for $99. Not a special - as a general rule.
LDS's - they'll be the authors of their own demise.

We used to have a really cool dive shop around here, but then an egomaniacal
stroke of galactic proportion bought into it, and it has gone straight down
the drain. We used to have barbeques on Friday and Saturday afternoons, crab
rodeo's, UW pumpkin carving all the usual fun stuff, gone.
The new partner is a huge a.shole, has a scary case of little man syndrome,
and his prices are simply criminal. The old excuse of come in and "let me
screw you raw" or you dont have airfills has gone the way of the Dodo.

I give my ( not so local ) LDS the option of matching the price or losing
the sale. Mostly they will plus throw in an airfill or something. As I have
said before gear sale is the ultimate cream on the cake for LDS. I buy gear
at my LDS when necessary but only if they can match best price and don't
worry if I go elsewhere.

Shouldn't take that long. If we have to order stuff, worst case it's 5 days
from CA to CT standard shipping. Alot of our vendors are close enough so we
get delivery in 1 or 2 days.

Did you pay in advance?

No, compared and bought the $99 one.

Talk to them. Find out why it's taking so long and what can be done about
it. See what they have to say, then make up your mind how to proceed. If all
else fails, tell them to cancel the order and order the stuff on your own.
If you talk to them, explaining your problem, and why you have to look
elsewhere, you can salvage at least part of the relationship you've built.
That's probably worth something.
