The Aeris computers are made by the same people that made my Oceanic and
Genesis computers. I forget the name. I chose those computers over others
for several reasons, one of which is that they accurately calculate MOD,
without artificially changing it to suit the lawyers of the world. I also
like the easily readable displays. The two computers both display the same
information, but they don't display it the same way. I most often use the
one that, to me, is easiest for me to comprehend quickly.
I don't know anything specific about the Aeris AI computers. I have a strong
preference for non integrated computers. The integration feature offers me
no advantage. I'm very used to my analog SPGs and actually prefer the needle
display over a digital one. I can judge my supply at a glance without
actually reading the numbers and, at the same time, can confirm that the
gauge has moved, or more importantly, has not (malfunction.) That's not as
easy to do with an AI gauge.
The bigger problem I have with AI computers, though, has to do with what
they display. Most display the lesser of no deco time or time based on
consumption at your present depth. Some switch back and forth (very
annoying), some require you to hit a button to see other information (almost
as annoying) and a few probably allow you to choose what to display before
the dive starts. Those that allow choice are probably fine. The rest do not
suit me at all. Remaining time at the present depth and consumption rate is
not significant information to me. My no deco time is always significant.
The point of this discussion is, make sure the computer you get displays the
information you want, the way you want to see it. If it doesn't, buy
something that does.
