I got a pair of fins that have been in storage for a few years and
they feel stiff. Is that a problem, or just use them until they break?
Is there a treatment for it?

Thanks!

don't rinse them in Viagra

I don't, but everytime I see a babe at the beach, they get stiff.

C'mon, something serious! ;)

Ass-uming they're plastic fins, they must have baked at an extreme
temperature to stiffen noticeably.

I'd walk around in them a bit (out to the mailbox and back usually starts
excellent speculation from the neighbors), and swim them in the pool, look
for stress cracks.

 Any doubts, replace.

Probably new straps, at the least.

I'll take them in my next hiking trip. If they survive, they'll be all
right.

ANY LIQUID OR OIL FOR IT? They are US Divers, so they are not the best
quality either.

Nah, I'm an auto mechanic, and I know every snake oil remedy there is.

 Plastic doesn't absorb much.

I wasn't kidding about the walking thing.

Working the fin is the only thing I know that will loosen it.

US Divers, especially older stuff, is as good as most.

OK, I'll probably go in the water today (if it isn't too cold) so
hopeful they'll work or break. A friend a mine told he got some stuff
to make it soft. Keep you posted.

Not all fins are supposed to be soft. As I recall, most of the US Divers
models generate force by being somewhat stiff. They're low tech, but still
effective. Other fins, like freediving fins, my Mares Plata Avante, TRE and
Quatro Power fins get their effectiveness from flexible blades that channel
water. Each type of fin works as it does because of a combination of shape
and flexibility. Trying to force them to be different almost always results
in reduced performance.

I'm replacing the faded mask and snorkel. The fins are a bit crooked,
but should do the job as you say.

PS: The water was too cold.

 Not a prayer.

 It's penetrating oil.

That stuff will sooner dissolve plastic than make it flexible.

You can't get much more flexible than dissolved.
