Can't we all just get along? - Dan's invitation

ben bradlee - 30 Nov 2007 15:54 GMT It's too bad that Greg has to be off in Belize or I'm sure he would think this get together would be a great idea. Just a short time ago Dan B. invited us to join him in Cozumel to enjoy his presence during our favorite activity, scuba diving. As the great moderator from the North, he has put himself in the position of leading the greatest potential melding of the great scuba minds ever to possibly occur. All we would need to do is join Dan and his wife Pat in Cozumel.
Here is our opportunity to enjoy the culture of the South. We'll be immigrants in the rich Mexican culture, able to speak Spanish, and drive to our hearts content in the confines of our portion of Quintana Roo. I'm sure Lee would welcome the opportunity to meet with the families of his neighbors to the south and compare his Cuban influenced Spanish with that of the native Spanish speakers of Old Mexico. Dennis, Doug, Scott, John, Chilly, and all the rest can savor the reef diving then get together for hours of great on-topic scuba discussion. We can look at each other face to face to ascertain others' depth of belief in the great conservative world as we know it. Brian might be there to tell us about Canada. Maybe we can empty a mini-bar or two from the rooms at the Iberostar before catching a few winks and an early morning dive. Oh the tropical camaraderie is only a few hours away.
Short of money? Maybe we can get work at the resort or in town to help pay for the room. I'm sure we have some services we can offer to earn a few bucks to help pay the freight. Don't plan to work full-time though, we need to have plenty of time to get together and talk in English about our homes and life. Heck, maybe we could chip in and together buy a house on Cozumel where we could stay part time - or, maybe full time. It's really a great place, the weather is wonderfully warm, the diving is excellent, and the cost won't be that much per person. Maybe if this works out we can buy more homes and land, maybe plan to retire in the great State of Quintana Roo.
I know this is short notice. Make your reservation now. Maybe I will.

(Just timed perfectly for a great pre-<insert your own holiday name here> present.) Dan knows his vacation dates for sure - although he probably hasn't heard about his possible duties as moderator for rec.scuba regulars and irregulars yet. January will be too late.

I just got back from a couple of weeks in Belize or I'd probably be going with to Bonaire.
In any event, when you decide you want to buy a place in Belize, put me on the list. When you decide you want to buy a place in Bonaire, I'll bet you can get Greg on your list.
For all those that are going to meet up with Dan Bracuk on Coz, have a great time.

> I know this is short notice. Make your reservation now. Maybe I will. This is the time of year when I have way too many things going on to escape to anywhere, but your idea is still a good one. I'm working on the Winterfest Boat Parade. Some know, some don't, but I'm the lead control boat for the parade. I set up, contact and manage all the boats that keep the spectators boats out of the way of the parade. It's a fill time job, on top of my full time job. Then there's my wife's birthday, December 5th. I'm setting up a party for her and, of course, buying birthday and Christmas presents. On Christmas morning, we'll have somewhere between 30 and 50 people over for Christmas breakfast. 5 lbs of bacon, 5 dozen eggs, two trays of hashbrown casserole, 5 lbs of sausage turned into Jayna's famous gravy, enough biscuits for those that combine them with sausage gravy and those that don't. A couple gallons of grits and Goetta, a sausage like treat native to Ohio, as is my wife. Then, visiting with friends and family for the day followed by a few days to recover, then back to facing the new year.
I've met Dan and Pat. We've done a few dives and eaten a few meals together. They're worth meeting for the first time and again. Excellent divers and both interesting and enjoyable folks. This won't be my next time, but it can be your first. Go for it.

So, you're a Yankee sympathizer?

Grumman-581 - 01 Dec 2007 05:23 GMT > Have her bring back a baseball cap for Lee ;-) I just got back from picking her up at IAH... Her plane had to return to the terminal because some idiot decided he wanted to exit the rear door of the aircraft while it was on the taxiway... The police escorted him away from the plane along with his luggage and stuff... Don't know if it was just your typical NY kook or if he realized rather late he was on the wrong plane... I suspect the former... Grace has been bitching about NYC and the people up there the whole drive back plus the time we spent eating dinner... Using the criteria that we had in the Navy, she would be definitely classified as a happy sailor... The only thing more ridiculous than the hotel costs up there are the apartment costs... It's bad enough that apartments cost $2-3K per month for something near her work location, but when you consider the size of them, it's even worse... Hell, I suspect a normal seagoing shipping container has more room in it the way she was describing it... Oh well, as I've said before, "9/11 -- Couldn't happen to a nicer town"...

Overall, it was a nice change from my Caribbean stuff. In general, the time on Kauai went too quickly. Did a lot of topside general touring & hiked part of the canyon (tried to go to the highlands swamp, but the trail was steep & way too slick). For diving, used 'Bubbles Below' - nice small 6-pack type outfit operating out of Port Allen. I'd go out with them again.
Big Island was another "drive all over the place" to see various historical sights, etc. Stayed with a 6th Generation member of the Lyman family at her coffee farm in Kona when we weren't over in Hilo for a good lava chopper ride. Dive op was "Kona Honu" which was a disappointment; see the other thread for more, including URLs to a couple of pics.
Oh, here's some new ones ... quick hacks from the night Manta Dive:

You need to come back during the summer and take their all day, three-tank trip to Ni'ihau. Best day of diving i have ever done out here.

The Big Island is great and I always suggest to anyone heading out there to do a helicopter ride. It's expensive but worth it. Not just because you get to see the lava flows up close (without a 6 hour hike) but because you also see how the Island is one complete ecosystem: you have parched desserts, tall mountains, tropical rainforests all within just a few miles of each other.

I showed to my kids as an incentive for them to get certified! However, I do have ethical problems with the Manta Ray dive: how is it different than a shark dive. You are chumming the waters.

The Manta Night Dive attracts only weak and injured mantas that would otherwise have problems finding food on their own. Sure, it's going against Darwinistic principles by aiding the least fit, but in that sense it's no less ethical than Meals on Wheels.
