Hi
Some questions:
1) Mares Wide, Mares Excel or Suunto D6?
Looking for an Xmas gift for a relative, can't make up my mind. I like
the Suunto for the extra features like the compass, but my own is
sometimes less than reliable. Opinions from users?
2) Australia: which dive sites? And why?
I have dived in Tahiti/Bora Bora, Kenya, Mexico, Malaysia, and Turkey
amongst a bunch of others. Now have the chance to spend a couple of
months knocking about the West Coast of Aus. Looking for some advice
on Australian dive sites around Cairns, Whitsundays, always with a
good dive guide/shop.
Any suggestions comments/preferences welcome.
Many thanks.

Cairns is actually on the East cost of Australia. There is good diving right
up and down the coast depending on what you are into. Probably best for you
to do some research and narrow thing down a bit

I heard Oceanic makes computers for many of the brands you see. I just got
one but haven't had a chance to try it yet.
As for Australia, just remember to hold the computer upside down when you
use it there. :-)

I know Oceanic and Aeris computers are made by the same company, Pelagic
Pressure Systems. I'm told some of the Sherwoods are as well

Do the Yongala out of Townsville. Even if you don't like wrecks that much,
the fish life on it is fantastic. Elsewhere the Coral Sea reefs are a lot
better than the Great Barrier Reef.
If you don't mind colder water, Byron Bay has some nice dives. Depending
when you go, Stradbroke Island near Brisbane is good for mantas, leopard
sharks and nurse sharks. They pass through at different times of the year,
so you won't see all of them
