Has anybody modified a replica Navy MK-V Helmet for actual dive use.
I
am refering to the better quality replicas that sell for about $1K by
Innovative Scuba Concepts Inc.

I just purchased one from Mar-Vel and I am curious as to what mods,
if
any, could make these helmets functional.

Well I just received my helmet, and as it turns out, it would require
significant modifying to make one of these replicas functional.  All
of the hardware are dumbies and non-functioning.  The replicas are
suitable for no more than decoration.

Why didn't you just pony up another $4k and get the real thing? You
could dive it and have something that would retain its value.

I purchased the helmet with the intent of only using it as a display
piece.  And I did consider, very breifly, purchasing a genuine MK 5.
I just could not justify in my mind such an expenditure.  Possibly in
the future I will reconsider.  But for now I plan to attend a vintage
diving meet at one of our local quarries.  If you volunteer a weekend
to help carry gear and do some tending, at the following meet you get
to suit up and take the rig on a dive.  If nothing else it should
prove to be a pretty cool experience.

It is fun, although the Mk V may be the worst heavy dress ever put
together for fun diving.

Sounds like some experience behind that remark?

Yeah, I've got a few recreational heavy dress dives.

The Mk V is heavy, clumsy, and has lousy viz. I've also dove a mid-30s
Morse commercial that was much nicer, and a Lerios sponger that was a dream.

If I were going to buy a "for fun" rig, I'd go for one of the many
Korean commercial hats that are flooding the market right now, cheap.
