Hello everyone, New to the group. I do read a few underwater blogs
and forums, and now here too. Headed to Key West in a few weeks with
a HD camera crew. Anyone wish to suggest some fav dive locations?
Will be in Key Largo also, but Key West is where we need some input.
Thanks and hope to put in my two cents now and again.

In the Key Largo area, it all depends on what you like. The Spiegel Grove
wreck is there and tends to be a "must see" for those that like big wrecks.
The Bibb, Duane and Eagle wrecks are also in the area. All of the deeper
reefs are good and many of the shallower ones are too. The key in the Key
Largo area is to select an operator with a smaller boat, willing to take you
someplace not visited daily by the cattle boats.
About 30 miles up the road from Key West, operators visit Looe Key. Looe Key
is considered by most to be one of the best shallow water dive sites in the
Keys. I'd select any operator other than Looe Key Reef Resort or, better
still, rent a small boat locally and drive yourself out to the reef. It's
easy to find and, with a rental boat, you can spend as much time diving or
snorkeling it as you please.
I'm not a fan of Key West diving. I've simply not had good luck finding good
visibility. Others have been luckier. I'll leave recommendations for good
sites directly out of Key West to them.

Oh, I suppose eel grass is OK, but the grass up by Bahia Honda is so much
nicer . . . and there's a big hammerhead that lives in the area too.

Didn't see him when we kayaked out to the island on the Atlantic side of
the island nor when we walked back from that island to the key
afterwards... I was surprised how shallow it turned out... Only came up to
my neck at the deepest spot...

He's reputed to hand out under the bridge. We first heard about him after
anchoring in the area and snorkeling in to the park. The tarpon fishermen in
the area apparently know it well. I've seen pictures in Florida Sportsman of
the hammerhead cutting a hooked tarpon in half.

Interesting... Good thing Grace didn't know about it... While Grace and I
were paddling the kayak out there (we started out over on the Gulf side
and went under the bridge), Kaitlyn was swimming / being dragged along
while she held onto the rope / handle at the rear of the kayak...
Does that classify as "chumming"?

The correct term is trolling. To chum, you'd have to cut her up into little
pieces.

I stand corrected...
