pugetsounddiver@gmail.com - 19 Oct 2007 15:24 GMT Dear Mr. Koplin ,
Thank you for contacting me with your opposition to shark fin soup. I appreciate hearing from you, and regret the delayed response.
As you may know, shark finning was restricted by the passage of the Shark Finning Prohibition Act of 2000 (H.R.5461), which outlawed finning in United States waters and by United States vessels. The bill passed the Senate by a unanimous vote and was signed into law on December 21, 2000.
The finning practice that was banned involved catching sharks, removing their fins for the purpose of sale, and then returning the carcass to the sea. The sharks are often still living. Because the ban was put in place to combat this specific procedure, it is still possible to obtain shark fins, as long as those shark fins are not obtained in this fashion. If the carcass is not discarded at sea, fins can be brought to shore for sale. Additionally, shark fins can be imported to the United States if they are imported with the carcass. These legal avenues mean that shark fin soup is not outlawed under the Shark Finning Prohibition Act.
You are right to be concerned about shark protection, and we in the United States need to continue to work with other countries to protect wild animals, particularly those whose populations are dwindling. Throughout my time in the Senate, I have worked to protect our endangered species. For each of the last three years, I have signed a letter to ask for funding for the Multinational Species Conservation Fund. In April of 2007, I cosponsored legislation that established the second annual Endangered Species Awareness Day, so the public could be educated about what is happening to endangered species around the world. I will continue to be a strong supporter of protecting and preserving our threatened species.
Please be assured that I will keep your views in mind should any legislation regarding shark fins or their procurement come before the Senate.
Thank you again for writing me to share your thoughts on this matter. Finally, you may be interested in signing up for my weekly update for Washington State residents. Every Monday, I provide a brief outline about my work in the Senate and issues of importance to Washington State . If you are interested in subscribing to this update, please visit my website at http://cantwell.senate.gov . Please do not hesitate to contact me in the future if I can be of further assistance.
Sincerely, Maria Cantwell United States Senator

You're just lucky you have a Democrat senator that even bothered to send a form letter. A Republican like Slade Gorton would have asked you for directions to the I-district restaurant serving the soup to make sure he didn't miss out on any.

Geezus.
Gorton answered a month ago.
It's f.cking raging bigots like you that are f.cking this nation up.

Well, unless you tell us what Gorton said, Greg's speculation about his answer seems valid, especially since you didn't refute Greg's speculation even though you apparently have Gorton's response in hand.

Scott is bullshitting as usual. Somehow I doubt that "Cyanide Slade" would care about shark finning. Like most Republicans, he wasn't exactly known for his conservation ethic. He certainly never cared about endangering salmon, that's for sure.
What's funny is that it was one of the most corrupt Republicans, along with the guy who really won the last election, that ever bothered to do anything legislatively about the issue:
from https://www.nrdc.org/legislation/record/chap2.asp :
"Shark Finning Prohibition Act" H.R. 3535, H.R. 5461, Rep. Randy Cunningham (R-Calif.); S. 2831, Sen. John Kerry (D-Mass.) Status: H.R. 5461 enacted on 12/21/00 (Pub. L. No. 106-557); S. 2831 referred to the Senate Commerce Committee
An Asian delicacy known as "shark fin soup" can cost $100 a bowl, fueling the practice of shark finning by fishermen in the central and western Pacific Ocean. In 1991, the percentage of sharks caught for finning was approximately 3 percent; by 1998, it had grown to 60 percent. After a shark's fin has been cut off, the animal is discarded into the ocean where it dies helplessly. Unregulated shark finning results in a poorly managed shark population. Most shark species grow slowly, experience late maturation, and produce small litters.
Sen. John Kerry introduced a bill (S. 2831) that would have prohibited shark finning in the U.S., mandated fishing restrictions, banned importation of improperly caught shark, and initiated efforts to ban shark finning internationally. Sen. Kerry's bill was referred to the Senate Commerce Committee, amended, incorporated in a larger coastal package and passed the Senate.
The House bill, H.R. 5461, prohibits the removal of fins of a shark, including the tail, and the discard of the carcass into the sea. While Rep. Cunningham's bill does not prohibit the subsequent sale of shark fins, it does discourage the waste of the other valuable components of sharks by mandating that no fin may be landed without its corresponding carcass.
H.R. 5461 passed overwhelmingly in the House by a vote of 390-1 on June 6, 2000. H.R. 5461, a later version of H.R. 3535, passed by unanimous consent in the Senate on December 7, 2000, and was signed by President Clinton on December 21, 2000. While environmentalists believe that H.R. 5461 is an effective first step, it does not go far enough in encouraging sensible shark management. More information is needed on the status of different shark populations. Funding should be directed to the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) for more shark research, and a fishery management plan should be established.

I am not cooperating, this was the biggest troll I have thrown in years, and with absolutely predictable results.
I know who and what she is, and her gun control BS has the same chance of passing as everyone else's.

Noted.

Write enough letters to enough congressmen and senators and you'll start to see that the answers you get are all the same. I commend you for taking the time to write your letter, and who knows, maybe your representative really feels this way. I do know that most representatives have their minds made up on most issues and rarely change regardless of how many letters are written.
Someone here should write a letter claiming that their uncle is very ill, and the only thing that seems to make them feel better is shark fin soup. Let's see what kind of letter the representative writes back. Trust me. They are more concerned with your vote than with doing anything productive.
I grew up in DC and spent a lot of time with senators and congressmen. They are all pretty sleazy.
That said, kudos to you and at least you are trying to do something. Now all we need is a "shark" swimming the halls of congress with lots of money to hand out. "Hey, vote to outlaw shark finning and I'll send you to Bermuda for free." Unfortunately, that's the way it works.
