Just booked ourselves to Cozumel/Iberostar for 8-15 Dec.  Feel free to
join us.  Play your cards right and I'll show you a jawfish

For an interesting price comparison, get the price for the package
from Toronto (YYZ) to Cozumel (CZM) from Air Canada Vacations here
http://www.aircanadavacations.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/home_page?storeId=10
001&langId=-1

Then see what air only costs from the same airline.

Are jawfish supposedly rare?  Or just in Coz?

It's been awhile since I was in Coz but I think there are some there.
In Curacao last month, I saw nary a one.

The Keys were teeming with them.  Just ask John Hanson or Curtis
Baldwin.

They're fairly common in the Cayman's out-islands.

I'd not be surprised, with that much sand around.  I didn't see any on
the Grove last winter, but didn't really see any sand on those dives,
either.  Accidentally leaving my perscription mask at home didn't help
much either :-)

So which did you book?  ;-))

That's some disparity.  One can only wonder the economics of that pricing.
Especially when you consider that the lower of the prices includes lodging.

It was kind of like that last year too.  Iberstar was our first choice
but we didn't book immediately.  Then when we decided to book, it was
not available.  We could however, buy tickets on the same airplane for
more than the price of a package.  My guess is that Air Canada
allotted x seats to Air Canada Vacations.  It was first come, first
served, and we were too late.

We went to Grand Cayman instead.  We had a reasonably good time.

This pricing is indeed, bizarre.

I will be in Coz from Dec. 10-14. I think the place I'm at is called
Hotel Cozumel. Never stayed there but it sounds crappy.

We should hook up. It won't be as nice as our West Ed Mall dive but
what the hell.

Cool-a-mundo.  Sounds like,...., a plan.   Is Hotel Cozumel in town?

We haven't booked our diving yet but will be doing most of it with the
onsite shop.  That's not necessarily the same as all of it.  What dive
shop are you using?

I'm not sure where Hotel Cozumel is. I heard it's about 10 minutes
outside of town. Apparently we have booked with Dive Paradise in the
mornings of Dec 10-14. Depending on what time they get back maybe we
could get together for some afternoon stuff.

You guys going to Coz, try to schedule a last dive relatively shallow,
drifting along above and about 50 feet or so beyond the edge of the drop
off. It's a very different perspective and an awe inspiring dive.

Dan and Pat, I hope you're going to do some dives to depths greater than you
did down here. I don't recall enjoying any of the shallow dives in Coz. They
were all too fast and furious for my taste. In my opinion, the best diving
around the island is over the edge, between 50 feet or so and whatever you
consider your maximum depth.

There are some real nice top-of-the-reef dives in Cozumel, or at least
there were until Wilma covered them all with sand.  The current isn't
roaring all the time.

I just dive where the boat takes me.  I don't have AOW so anything
over and above that is much too complicated.

Take your computers. When I was in Coz, they asked where divers wanted to
go. I don't think I ever heard anyone way "someplace shallow." Coz is about
walls and they start somewhere around 50 feet or so.

Since Dan's probably been to Cozumel more times than you, I wonder if
he already knows that?

Just my opinion.

My computer is in my console, I always dive with it.  The thing is, on
our recent trip to the Keys, it just never seemed necessary to turn it
on.

Come to think of it, mine's always there too. I don't think I looked at it,
or my SPG, even once while we were in the Keys together. I did look at my
compass and watch occasionally.

I looked at mine because I hadn't done a dive that shallow since I had
bought the computer and was curious what it would show... Well, that
plus being curious how much digging I would need to do to get down to
my first deco stop... <grin>

Hotel Cozumel is the resort formerly known as Fiesta Inn.  One website
said it was a mile and a half south of town and the Papa Hogs site
said it was a quarter mile south of town.  I'm guessing it's a bit
south of the old cruise ship pier, where the airplane wreck.

Where's ReefFish when we need him?

Ibersostar is even further south.

The last time we stayed at Iberostar, the dive shop had two 1 tank
afternoon dives.  I just emailed them to see if that's still the case.

If it is, we could do something like this.  We'll do our morning
dives, and after lunch you come to Iberostar.  We'll do the late
afternoon dive.  Then Patti and I will have a quick shower and the
three of us can grab a cab to Hotel Cozumel.  You can clean up dump
your gear and then we can go to supper somewhere.  There are some
restaurants around the southern pier, or we can go downtown.  Cabs are
cheap in Coz.

Or we can skip the dive and just hook up for supper somewhere.

Dan,

I sent an email but I don't know if you got it or not.

The plan you suggested in October will work fine. We are booked for
morning dives from the 10th to the 14th. I could do those then boogie
down to Iberostar after lunch and do the late afternoon thing. I will
have a car so getting around won't be a problem.

Flying to Akumal tomorrow(today). I'll be at the internet cafe in the
evenings so ping me.

Vista Del Mar in Akumal. No plans for dives as of yet. The Zero
Gravity guys are all playing in the jungle so we may go with Dennis
Weeks for a day or two. However at this stage of the game for us we're
having fun just trying to find entrances on our own.

We stayed there the last time we went down. The room was a bit small but
it worked. Being on the beach doesn't suck.

Even if you spend time looking for the entrance, you see something new.

Have a great trip. We're not able to go this year, so I'm a bit envious.
