DanVolker - 08 Sep 2007 17:31 GMT I don't know if bullshark ( Kurt) post here muc any more, but the last time he was on splashdown with Sandra, he told her about an island in the Indopacific area owned by some Swiss guy, that was the best dive resort he had ever been exposed to...As Sandra and I just returned from 10 days in Fiji, now Sandra wants to go back, and Kurt's description has her excited about making this the next destination.
Can anyone give me bullshark's email address?
Thanks, Dan Volker use dan@sfdj.com to email me
p.s. you guys should see Sandra's photos of the top Beqa Lagoon dive sites !!!!!

Our trip to Beqa Lagoon Resort ( Fiji) was awesome, and was improved dramatically by us being part of a group of 16 divers, all with waaayyy over 100 dives each.(thanks to Don and Judy Paschal who organized the trip)... . We got to do any site we wanted to. This would be something to shoot for with Wakatobi as well.

I had 2 pairs of freediving fins in a freedive bag, inside the Rob Allen bag, this wrapped with my Sporasub wet suit and other soft stuff....zero damage. The Fijians went crazy of my fins !! :-) I did about 75% freediving, 25% scuba diving...Most of the dives were sea mounts going from 8 feet from surface, down to around 60 to 90 feet. Awesome place for freediving!

So is Gangga Island, rumored to be another great place, but I agree that bullshark must have been talking about Wakatobi.

If you are interested, let me know...I would like to get at least 5 or 6 divers to go with--it provides juice with the diveboat, to go to the sites you want to dive :-) Regards, Dan Volker

:^) I was thinking that myself. I'd be happy with any, not having dove them before.
Not that Wakatobi should be compared to Koh Tao in anyway, but it would have been good to have an influencial group with me on that trip. I ended up at the same dive site at least 4-5 times on that trip and it was the least favorable site for me.
Should such a thing happen at a Wakatobi, a larger group would be able to stop that nonsense.

High current dives get passed over on "average diver" mix boats, but they frequently have by far the best fauna and flora. If I hear they have dives they can;t take most people on, then these will be dives I will want to hear more about :-)

Still, the website mentions they have sites for "instructor-level" divers. They'll also rent you a pony and let you dive solo if you're "instructor-level".
Most of the divers that make it out to Wakatobi tend to be more experienced than the average, I'd imagine. People don't spend that kind of time and money getting to a place in the middle of nowhere where there's nothing to do but dive unless they're serious about diving.

I would have thought the same of Beqa Lagoon Resort, but the two other boats were full of divers that did not like currents, and who got injured getting back on the boat in 4 to 5 foot seas--not exactly that challenging... And thrills are a good part of diving :-)

Did you say you were going at Xmas?? If so, that is probably too soon for me to organize now.
DanVolker - 09 Sep 2007 19:55 GMT > > > "DanVolker" <d...@sfdj.com> wrote in message > [quoted text clipped - 25 lines] > > - Show quoted text - Sandra "wants" to go Christmas...I don't know if we will have anybody to go with by then, so we may have to wait longer..plus, I don't really want to dive durring a rainy season, so I will have to find out if this is taking place during Christmas at Wakatobi that time of year ( it would be rainy season at Beqa lagoon Resort.). Let me know dates that appeal to you. Regards, DanV

Yes it is, but no it's not. They went year-round this year.

Hot running water in the toilets would be great - I could schampoo and rinse my hair so much quicker.
The rate isn't too bad, about the same as a luxury liveaboard. The add-on for the Bali-Wakatobi flight is about the same as I paid for the Quito-Galapagos flight and for the price of the boat, I could get a fancy villa at Wakatobi: "Enjoy the glass washbowls in the bathroom and the floor to ceiling glass wall of the shower through which you can see the ocean and sunset."
There's not much more in life more enjoyable than a glass washbowl. I bet their toilet doesn't explode either.
Perhaps I had better go in September, before the bleaching starts.

But they don't know what I know. Mine info comes from the top: Al Gore.

In the meantime, without the lottery, the plans are for less expensive dive trips, France and Greece . . but all plans are in the very early stages. Anything could happen.
