I have some vintage, meaning old, dive gear I want to get rid of.
Specifically a US Divers Sea Otter BC, a SeaPro ATPack BC with a compartment
for lead shot in lieu of a weight belt, a regulator with a US Divers
Conshelf XIV second stage and a Mares 12 III octopus, and a SubAquatic
regulator with a primary and octopus. This stuff is from the 1980s.
I blew up both BCs and the bladders seem to hold but before anyone used
them, they should be serviced. The same goes for the regulators.
This stuff is so old I'm not sure if it's worth anything and I don't even
know if parts are available for repairs. I couldn't find anything this old
on EBay or other auction sites.
My question is, is it worth trying to sell or even give this stuff away or
is it an accident waiting to happen? Any suggestion of web sites where I
may find similar equipment is appreciated.
Thanks
McGinty

There are very strict laws that have recently been enacted concerning
the sale or disposal of dive gear that is so old that it poses serious
safety and liability concerns. These laws are very complicated and
costly to adhere to. Your best bet would be to send the gear to me so
that it can be properly decommisioned in a compliant manner.

Mike, do you honestly think he's gonna bite on that?
Send it to ESG. He's a collector of all things odd, old and
collectible in SCUBA.

Well, it doesn't hurt to try... <grin>

Actually, I believe that I used to own those exact models of gear back
in the early '80s... Not sure exactly what happened to all of it... A
lot of my stuff from my Navy days seems to have gotten lost in the
various moves over the years...

I donated of my gear from the 70's to the local fire dept. I think
they kept the SP horse collar and the steel 72. I still have the mask
somewhere.

I think some of your gear may be serviceable, but it would have to checked
out by a qualified tech at a dive shop. IMO you can always put the stuff
on eBay and just be honest about it.

You _do_ realize that the phrase "qualified tech at a dive shop" is subject
to editorial, gut wrenching laughter and potentially heinous prices, right?

'80's gear is just used gear. Collectors are looking for something else.
