Just back from a week in upper keys. While there wee had some fun and
the expense of Dive Shops.
Went into three shops to get airfills from Key Largo south to
Islamorada. At each shop we presented a C-Card that was completely and
Obviously fake from the Agency name to the level (It said we were
Meth-Ox certified!). It carried no picture and the info was so bogus as
to be comical.
I'm not going to say which shops are involved but all are reputable and
known.
Shop A was the toughest, on the first trip the shop manager got a good
lauh and asked for a real card. Foiled... Buton a second trip a tank
jockey at the desk glanced at the front of the card, said okay and
started pumping gas. We let her in on the joke and had a good laugh. She
did ask to see a real card after being told about the fake one.
Shop B the store owner was working, she closely inspected each tank's
VIP and Hydro, then inspected the exterior of each tank and valve for
damage. She asked for a C-Card and was handed the bogus one. She glanced
at it, asked to see the back (recall no picture on it) and started
lugging tanks to the fill station. After being given the card a second
time and told to look it over, she admitted to being had and asked for a
real card.
Shop C was the best - Took the tank and asked for a card - the glanced
at it, made a comment about the agency name (we told them they were
mispronouncing the acronym), then started filling the tank. While
waiting we asked if there were any shops affiluted with our "agency" in
the area, they said there was one in Marathon. We let them in on the
joke but they never asked for a real card and put a sticker on our tanks
that will allow us to have future fills faster as it tells the shop they
have checked the tank VIP/Hydro and out C-Card already.
Three shops, three days - That may make us a legit agency!
I'm going to make the cards look a bit better by adding a photo and
using type insread of a hand-drawn logo. We also put cert numbers high
that 10.. the fun continues.

It's hard to imagine a person doing anything so stupid as what you've
described in your post. The point is? Oh, I get it; you're an idiot!

Because it was a joke and some of us have a sense of humor unlike having
your head in sh.t as you seem too.
We never expected the cards to be accepted without even a question. We
did expect some folks to get a chuckle. And while cards are not a legal
requiremnt, we all know they are industry standard (same with VIP's).
I'm purposely leaving the shop names out as the next person working the
shop may not have accepted the cards. I'm also not saying what are cards
were as we are now curious how often they get accepted.
(they were not NAPI - the name we used should have stopped anyone with
even a single neuron firing from accepting them. The only name more
blatent would have been F.A.K.E.

Indeed!
BTW, these weren't NAPI ("National Association of Professional
Instructors") cards, were they?

Technically, there is no legal requirement for you to be certified to
get an air fill... Nor is there a requirement that your tank gets a
visual inspection each year... I used to get my fills done at a fire
extinguisher company that also does hydros and air fills for the fire
stations... All they ever required was a hydro...

I've never been asked for a c-card when I bring my own tanks into a shop. If
I don't have my tanks they have always asked for a card before renting me
one. The shop I use mostly has many customers that use their cylinders for
paint ball, they have to sign a waiver when they buy a tank but if they come
in with their own tank (and it's current) all they have to do is pay.

I skated by for over 20 years without a C-card and was *usually* able
to get air fills or tank rentals without a problem... These days, it
might be a bit more difficult what with the liability paranoia that is
going around... Interestingly, I was not asked for a C-card over at
Windy Point on Lake Travis last week...

I don't know about just getting tank fills because I always get mine at
the LDS where they know me and have never been carded there.
However, I have been carded everywhere I went to dive. I was carded on
the Nekton Pilot, Bonaire (including Nitrox), Discovery Diving (Morehead
city, NC), numerous quarries, Cozumel, to name a few. The only place I
have NOT been carded (a dive operation that will remain unnamed), I
think was an oversight because I have been back with them and they did
require a card on subsequent trips.

My current LDS requires that they see your C-card at least once and
they enter it into their computer... After that, you don't have to
show it again... Unfortunately, they closed down their shop which was
closest to me, so I guess they're now my "not-so-LDS"... If I'm
pressed for time, I'm more likely to just try to find a place to fill
my tanks once I get to my destination...

I used to dive a particular quarry when I lived in the Midwest several
years ago. The quarry changed hands and I met the new owner almost
immediately as I was doing their website. Neither one had ever asked
me for a C-card to dive there. I guess owner #1 was fine with it
because when he met me initially I happened to be diving with an
instructor who ran a dive shop at the quarry.
A gear manufacturer was doing maybe the 3rd demo day at this
particular quarry, and my husband and I had agreed to help out and
lead tours. We were checking in at the quarry office that day, and
when I went in for my arm band, the lady inside whom I had never seen
before asked me for a C-card.
I went back out to the truck and told my husband, who reached
inside hte back door of his truck and pulled out his dive log with all
his cards. After several minutes of rummaging through gear bags
knowing that it had been years since I had seen my OW card, I managed
to produce a deco instructor card and a trimix card, and trotted those
inside.
The lady looked at the cards as though I had just forged them and
said, "No, Dear, I said I need to see your C-card."
go figure...........

LMAO, welcome to Florida. ;)
I have been getting my tanks filled without any certification for
about twenty years now. I only recently got a OW Padi because a friend
paid for it to have a buddy who could go on cattle boats with.
What a waste of money, I have serious questions about anyone of the
people being competent enough to snorkel after the class, let alone go
down to 60ft. They might as well fill tanks for anyone who has the
desire IMO.
