Just got back from Utah where I was certified in a big crater. Not sure I
can call myself a diver yet, but I had a blast swimming around, and I also
wanted to thank everyone for all their help and support.
You were all right about getting down deeper and learning some tricks to
help with buoyancy. I can't believe I was swimming around with a completely
empty bc and just using my fins and some breath control to go up and down.
I finally figured out why everyone loves this sport so much.
Now I have to go to a "real" place to dive.
Thanks again.

I don't think that exists in Utah...
You best bet is to get on a plane and head for Cozumel... The next few
days look like they might be interesting diving in Cozumel... There
looks to be a "Dive with Dean" scheduled for around Monday or
Tuesday...

Unfortunately, gotta work sometime. And you are correct, Utah is not the
dive capital of the US. :-) It's also not the liquor store capital of the
US.

But they make up for it with the winter skiing...

Not sure. Love it here this time of year, but as soon as the weather turns
sour and the hurricane season is over hopefully.

You're more than welcome.
>I finally figured out why everyone loves this sport so much.
In France (and French Territories), your first OW dive is called your "baptime"
or "baptism." Welcome to the fold! :-) Mine was 08/25/2005 in Bora Bora.
>Now I have to go to a "real" place to dive.
That's what "travel agents" are for. Find a good LDS and figure out where they go
both locally and where it requires air travel. Start to plan your vacations around those
trips and go places where there are good diving sites. Watch the NG for announcements
of a "DWX" gathering ( "Diving with X"; "X" = initial of whomever of us is organizing the
gathering). And then come join us.
The Fl. Keys are a very good place to practice your skills (buoyancy techniques, weighting and
trim etc.) and learn new things (handling currents, surge etc.) and there are plenty of rec.scubans
in that area around who will be more than happy to show you the ropes, as many have helped me.
I myself will be in Fl. for at least 3 different weeks in 2008, albeit mostly in the Sarasota area (and
near the central springs) but will try to make it down to the keys at some point.
At any rate, welcome to the club!!! And most importantly, go diving, and go have fun!!!

Attaboy. Now we can all tell you the truth about the incredibly high
student loss rate during check dives. 8)

I was definitely nervous, but not even close. Actually, it was that 99
degree water that almost did me in. I could have been the first poached
diver if I had stayed down any longer.

Sure rub it in. Come visit New England and cool off. Diving Gloucester
in July, water was 46f.

Drive over to Hood Canal. Lots of great sites that you can walk in to.

Welcome aboard, and remember; you are no longer at the top of the food
chain.

Uh.......?
Grumman-581 - 19 Aug 2007 22:59 GMT
> Uh.......?
Exactly!
One of the problems with planning a vacation to Florida very far in
advance is that hurricanes can pop up and ruin your vacation...
Checking the weather and deciding at the last minute works a lot
better, although you must either be willing to pay more for airfare or
be willing to drive... I like the flexibility of driving since I can
take my tanks with me and dive at any spring along the way if the mood
hits me... Plus, I hate having to deal with all the TSA bullshit these
days if I can easily avoid it... It's a 2 day drive from here to SoFL
if I don't stop anywhere along the way to do some diving... According
to StreetAtlas, from your area, you're looking at about 2050 miles or
36 hours of driving... From here, it's 1200 miles and about 21 hours
of driving... If it's just you (i.e. no wife, girlfriend, kids), it's
probably cheaper to fly than drive... If you know that there are no
places along the way where you would want to stop, flying might also
be preferable...
Check out the various FunJet specials / charters that they have
periodically... They sometimes have really good deals... Currently,
they have an air-only special from Denver to Cozumel (non-stop) for
$199 for departure dates 8/25, 9/8, 9/15, 9/22, 9/29 via Frontier
Airlines... I guess this is their "Dive with Dean" special... Although
driving to Cozumel *is* an option and it might be something that
someone would want to do at least once in their life, with air fares
this cheap, I would be hard pressed to do it unless I was going to
spend a few weeks in Cozumel so that the cost of driving down there
was offset by not having to rent a vehicle while down there...

Come to Australia and dive the GBR we don't have hurricanes here. Whatever
diving has got to be better than a swim in a volcano bath. btw diving in old
quarries is stupid and you have to be desperate to do it and it cost heaps
for the crap you get
we have cyclones.
and good gun laws

It is cold when that happens. ;)
People make them out to be way more of a problem than they are here.
Our places are built to take em. It is like a nice vacation when they
do hit, and a great excuse for a party when they are coming.

I doubt Jamaica is going to fare well.
