I've done dozens of dives in Okoboji but only once off Arnolds Park, the
link below.  There are numerous public access points, albeit not well
marked, around the lake.  You can enter at any public access.  I've gone to
over 100' down from shore just west of Arnolds Park.  Arnolds Park is a good
bottle dive.  Max depth is 130 something, if I remember correctly.

I asked that question a couple of years ago when I was working on a
contract up in Cedar Rapids... Basically, you gotta be pretty
desperate to dive around there... I was up there for 6 months and had
my tanks and gear with me, but I decided it wasn't worth freezing my
a.s off just to say that I had dove Iowa... While flying around the
area, looking at local lakes and rivers, none of them seemed clear
enough that I was willing to freeze my a.s off... On the other hand,
they did have a nice free gun range south of Cedar Rapids, west of
I-380 and slightly north of the Iowa River...

A problem with asking a general question about "Iowa" is that conditions in
the northwest corner may vary from conditions a couple hundred miles away in
the east-central part of the state.  It's better to ask the same question
about Nevada where Lake Mead and Fallon are damn near identical for scuba
diving.

So, you're saying that there are places in Iowa where you won't freeze
your a.s off diving? <grin>

This time of year, August, you can stay, roughly speaking, in the top 30
feet of the water column and not get cold if you are using a 3 mm wetsuit.
For sure if you stay in the upper 20 feet of the water column with the 3mm
wetsuit there won't be even a little chance of getting cold.  Absolutely, by
staying in the upper 10 feet of the water column and using a 5 mm wetsuit
and hood your chances of getting cold are almost eliminated.  Hell, just lay
on the surface on a sunny day with 90+ temperatures with a 9 mil farmer
john, hood, and gloves and you damn sure won't get cold - just a micro-tad
less than 100% assured.

Hmmm... I think that is one of the most insightful posts that you've
even posted... I know you intended it as humor, but I suspect that
there is a *lot* of truth in it with regards to Iowa diving... <grin>

If the water had been cold and looked as nice as a Florida spring, I
would have found some way to put enough neoprene on me to go diving...
Since the lakes and such that I found didn't look that much more
enticing than most Texas lakes, I decided it wasn't worth the trouble
of having to defrost my 'nads after the dive...

Of course, I kind of knew I was in trouble when they told me that
winter was over before I came up there and upon arriving, I saw a 15+
ft high pile of snow in the parking lot... Well, that plus they called
the 4+ inch pile of snow all over my car one morning, a "slight
dusting"...

you guys ever dive off the coast of Maine ? even in July you need a full 7mm
farmer john, hood, gloves, ect.

But is there anything to see?  I have no reason to believe that Iowa
has anything to see in their lakes that makes it worth freezing your
a.s off... One could definitely argue that there is not much above the
water in Iowa that is worth seeing either (miles and miles of corn
fields get boring fairly quickly)...

Unless you're in Bluff Country.

They don't grow corn over there?

Water is either warm, or solid.
