John Hanson - 28 Jul 2007 21:49 GMT I'll be in St Louis, Missouri and Lexington, Kentucky in the next week or two for work. Is there any diving to be had near those locations? TIA

It's been discussed on the newsgroup before, so you should be able to find some comments on it with a google groups search...

What does everyone think of their cavern course? Would it be worth my while to take it? In the meantime, I'll do a search for it in the archives.

I don't like the concept of guided dives where you can't go off exploring on your own nor the fact that you must use their tanks... Some people like that kind of crap and Bonne Terre caters to them...
Since you're from the frozen north, the temperatures in the mine should make you feel right at home... <grin>

It's easier to dive in cold water in a wetsuit when surface temps are around 80.

One reason why you use their tanks - it is a nice haul in and out of the cave to the dive platform
water is 58% & the New Madrid fault runs thru it ( at least that is what they told us

If you get the right instructor you get to work on the skills you should be working on anyway, plus getting a gentle intro to how to approach real cave diving. The stuff you learn from a good instructor will make you a better all round diver in any conditions.

Jeez.
Al Wells - 31 Jul 2007 12:35 GMT > Hey, thanks. What does everyone think of their cavern course? Would > it be worth my while to take it? In the meantime, I'll do a search > for it in the archives. Cavern is a course that lays the groundwork for everything that comes after it. It is where you learn basic skills and responses. It takes 2 full days. I recommend that you take it in real caves in FL with an instructor who teaches full cave. I know instructors whom I think are good, and some whom I think are not so good, and I would be happy to take that discussion to email. I would also trust Curtis's opinions.
Any PADI OW instructor who is a certified full cave diver can teach their cavern course. It is essentially the same as the cave agencies' courses, but the instructor qualifications are more relaxed. You can easily end up with a PADI instructor who has very little real cave diving experience.
I have been told that there are some good cave instructors in Missouri, but I don't know any of them beyond reputation and internet and haven't seen them work. At least one of them has an excellent reputation, and Curtis probably knows him or has friends who do.
With a good instructor, cavern is a great course that will significantly improve your diving, even if you don't go on to cave. You also get a ticket to some really cool places to dive.

IIRC, it's about 2 hours from St Louis.

ben bradlee - 29 Jul 2007 01:57 GMT > Mapquest says 1 hour so I'll probably do it if I have the time. If time is limited that's not a dive to consider. You are required to sit thru an orientation that lasts about 45 minutes, if I remember correctly, then you need to schedule the dive into their tour schedule. It's worth doing at least once.

I thought the dives were okay when first certified to be in clear water, and practice buoyancy - it used to be about $90 a dive wo wet suit and gas was $.79 a gallon
Like Gru said they are all quided - a couple of years ago some diver went in during the week - they weren't open at least one of the divers died - there are places you do not want to go without proper equipment and training.
The place has artificial lighting above the water for illumination
There is no fish, no plant life. There is an old drill in the wall and an old shack
Grumman-581 - 29 Jul 2007 02:57 GMT > There is no fish, no plant life. There is an old drill in the wall and > an old shack But you get the advantage of lead contaminated gear afterwards... <snicker>
It could be an interesting dive if it wasn't for the requirement that it be guided... Hell, I don't even like it when a boat or dive site requires me to have a buddy...

All my ancestors were hard rock miners.
Lutherans to boot.
Joe English - 29 Jul 2007 01:28 GMT > I'll be in St Louis, Missouri and Lexington, Kentucky in the next week > or two for work. Is there any diving to be had near those locations? > TIA st louis - weekends only Bonne Terre Mine
$$$ - very cold water - you walk down into the cave - it is an abandoned lead mine. They do not let you carry lights - onlt the dive masters. You are never (well hardly never) in an overhead environment - you can surface to air 99.9% of the time. It is crystal clear water with very little to see. I did it when I was first certified to get some experience. I wouldn't do it again
If you like ot get together for a drink - or so - give ne a holler - hopefully you will be clsoe to downtown
email me - drop the 2 from my name

Rick Simms - 30 Jul 2007 17:03 GMT >I'll be in St Louis, Missouri and Lexington, Kentucky in the next week >or two for work. Is there any diving to be had near those locations? >TIA Lexington has a shop called New Horizons.

They usually dive Laurel Lake.

I know that they are having a treasure hunt and pig roast on August 4th at Laurel Lake. If you call the shop they can give you all of the information. You might ask them about diving Dale Hollow or Cumberland Lake. Cumberland has a some old towns underwater as does Dale Hollow.More diving goes on at Dale Hollow these days as Cumberland is having work done on the Wolf Creek dam and they have severly dropped the lake levels.
