Diving in San Diego

I'll be out in San Diego next month.  Three questions:

Is there a place I can rent doubles out there or should I plan to dive
with a single?

Can anyone recommend a good charter op?  I see several on the web.  It'd
be a day trip.

Is there good shore diving to be had in the area, and if so where?

If you can't find doubles for rent and your own gear allows for this
option, you can go the independent-80s route... Or sling one AL80 as a
stage bottle...

I know.  But I don't have the nylon strap arrangement to make
independent doubles with, so the choice is really either my BC or my
BP/wing.

No STA?

Nope.  I already own the BC, which I like a lot.  (It's a Chute III, a
back inflator with decent D-rings on it.)  Why spend the money on an STA?

Well, for one thing, you wouldn't have to choose between single and
double tank setups before you were at the dive location.

Does it ever end?

I've ceased to wonder.  My poor little brain overheats in the face of
such conundrums.

S' okay, mine boils.

You can make independent doubles with a pair of stainless stell bands
also...

If you're got a BP & wing, the quickest solution is to just rig an
AL80 up as a stage bottle... Stainless steel hose clamp on the bottom
hooked to a loop of nylon line that goes through a snap bolt... Nylon
line on the top looped through another snap bolt... All you need on
your BP's harness is a chest D-ring and another one on your side... If
you can't find a stainless steel hose clamp large enough for the AL80
diameter, you can connect 2 of them together... Home Depot / Lowes has
everything you need to make it work... I rigged up something very
similar with the help of Curtis a couple of years ago during a trip to
SoFL for some spring diving (except it was a stage on both sides so as
to make it basically a sidemount rig)...

I know, but I'm not taking apart a set of my doubles to take the bands
to CA by air.  I'd just take my BC instead.

As above...it's simpler to either rent doubles or take my BC than it is
to sling bottles off my harness.  Besides, I'd like to do some diving in
Wreck Alley if I can.  I usually go inside the wrecks I dive, and I want
to do that with a rig I've already spent time in, not something I've
rigged up for the day.  My BC with a single (and pony) and my BP/wing
with doubles are both familiar setups.  I can visually determine what I
can fit through and what I can't in either one.

That's one of the reasons that I like running independents instead of
manifolded doubles... If I'm flying somewhere, I just unscrew the
bands and toss them in the suitcase... With the wingnuts on the bolts,
it's quick enough to change out the tanks on a boat... I keep a couple
of spare wingnuts with me just in case I losen one too much and lose
it while aboard the boat...

That's assuming that you can actually rent the doubles... I'm just
suggesting an alternative in case you can't find any for rent...

Because of the layout of most ships, backmounted tanks definitely are
easier to get around with... I've dove them with sidemounted tanks
without back gas and found that if the ship is upright, it's somewhat
inconvenient since you're a bit wide for the passageways and such...
If the ship was on its side, it would probably work though... <grin>

For plenty of answers, check out the local diving website:

www.divebums.com

It's best to plan diving with a single.  Not only is it going to be
tough or impossible to find a rental, but many of the boats grumble
about them as well.

www.loisann.com

See my recent report on diving the Coronados with them.

> Is there good shore diving to be had in the area, and if so where?

Yes.

La Jolla Cove, et al.  See www.divebums.com

For an international experience, make the two-hour drive to Ensenada,
where you can find shore (and boat) diving off La Bufadora.

You may also want to put this URL through the wayback machine:

http://www.diegoweb.com/diving/

This was where Ron Fuller (RIP) had some pages on the local San Diego
scuba diving, including several shore diving sites.  His widow, Mary,
left them online for a few years, but it looks like they may have
finally gone away sometime when she transitioned diegoweb to others to
run.
