I just passed my confined water tests and all the written exams for PADI
today. Now all I have to do is find some open water to get certified.
Thinking about Homestead in Utah. After that, who knows where.
I honestly feel that you all helped me, in one way or another.
Still having a little trouble swimming level and staying down when I start
moving -- getting better, however, and much more stable on the bottom. My
instructor claims that it's not uncommon, and when I get a little deeper it
will be easier to attain neutral buoyancy and get around -- the closer to
the surface you are the harder it is to stay down. Also, try not to take a
deep breath before you start kicking.
Thanks again. I'll keep you posted. :-)

Your instructor is correct.

Thanks. So far he's been right on everything else. As I've said, and
everyone else in the group agreed, I finally found a good one. Can't wait
to get down a little deeper and see what happens.

Good stuff. The hard part's behind you. Now you get to do the really
fun stuff, learn how to dive.
If you get the chance, get together with some of these yahoos from
rec.scuba. Some of them are really good divers as well as great guys
to dive with. Somehow or other the bs is left in the newsgroup.
Don't miss a chance to dive with the Florida contingent, but don't get
between any of them and a hot looking babe. You'll be crushed. I once
found myself in a precarious position between Al Wells and ESG, both
slavering over a buxom young lady's cleavage. Of course she'd put a
blinking neon pen right in there to draw them, and they were like
moths to a flame. I finally had to put a stop to it when ESG tried to
put a fork thru Al's tongue as it lay on the table. It was
embarrassing but the diving of the day made up for it. I think that
was the day we did the Pedophile Dive on Miss Conduct. The guy who
runs that boat is the funniest dive op I've ever encountered. The SI
is almost as good as the dives.

Diving seems to be a magnet for pretty, young girls. I figure if I never
get in the water I'll be at least stuck on a boat with bikini-clad beauties.
Hey, it's my fantasy. :-P

Looks like you're well on your way. Wasn't too long ago that I was feeling
similar anxieties so I can surely emphasise. But it (your confidence) will come
in time. Just relax, and give it the time it needs. But what these folks here say is
true and is one of the best lessons I've learned here. Just try to have fun for now,
and the skills will become 2nd nature in good time.
Keep an eye out for when we're gathering for a DW<insert significant initial> event
and join us.
Congratulations at any rate.

Sounds like a trim issue. Look for ways to adjust where your weight is until
you stay horizontal when you stop kicking. Many of us used metal back plates
to move the weight off our waists. It's an effective method, but not the
only one.

Your instructor's at least partly right.

Thanks. I'm not sure but I feel I may have not had enough weight for the
conditions in the pool. We never did an actual weight check, but it was
close.

I find if I am out of the water for a couple of months or so it takes a
little while to get the bouyancey correct. It is amazing what you can do by
inflating your lungs a bit more or exhaling a bit more

Neutral bouyancy is hard in 10 feet of water. Much easier in 30.

It was discussed rather recently...

"For instance, on planet Earth, man had always assumed that he was more

reasons."

obviously not a thread I looked at and for good reason or maybe I did and

The way that threads morph around here, you can't really judge it by
"subject" field... It might start out as a dive thread, morph into a
gun thread, then to a politics thread... Of course, the reverse is
also true... On the other hand, I don't think that I've *ever* seen
any thread that was crossposted to soc.culture.thai morph into
*anything* that was worth reading... Steve's got himself a couple of
admirers over there and obviously they have the hots for him...
Anything that gets crossposted over there automatically gets
shitcanned as far as I'm concerned... I'm not that crazy about Thai
food either, so I doubt that I would be missing anything that wasn't
just trash talk by Steve's WebTV-equivalent admirers...

More direct paraphrasing from that guy you say you don't backchannel with,
whos name you say you don't know.
How...coincidental.
