dechucka - 11 Jul 2007 07:45 GMT Mine are rather crap or not so great pictures of fish and coral etc that you have probably seen before so I won't post. However there is a couple of pics of a huge toadfish ( probably tetractensos hamiltoni ), a blurred nudibranch which was great in live view, a gorgonian fan covered in black brittle stars ( wish the vis was better ) and a pic of me truly .
Don't know where to post them and I will figure out how when you tell me where.
ps whoever wanted wobbies we only saw a couple and my photos where even worse than crap. I see more wobbegongs diving around the Gong
Grumman-581 - 11 Jul 2007 08:39 GMT > Don't know where to post them and I will figure out how when you tell me > where. There's a few free photo hosting sites out there... Your ISP might also include provisions for you being able to create your own web page... If you have a gmail account, you get a web page with it -- decent sized also... If you have a yahoo mail account, you get a web page with it also, but not that large... TinyPic.com is also an option... With it, you upload your image to it and they give you a URL that you can post in the newsgroups...

Grumman-581 - 11 Jul 2007 09:08 GMT > can't I just post to a binary group? Some news servers do not handle binary groups, so some people on the group might not be able to see them... Some news servers have a very short retention period for binary posts, so some people might not see them before they disappear... The quickest solution is to go to TinyPic.com... You don't need an account or anything... You won't get a full resolution photo though since they will compress or resize it if they (their upload software) consider it too big... Does your ISP give you a web page with your account?
Grumman-581 - 11 Jul 2007 09:08 GMT <snip>
According to your IP address, you're using iinet.net.au... DSL, I believe... Checking their website, I see where they give you 30M web space... Enough for a few photos...

Cool I will getting some crap photos on the nett
I have never up loaded pictures to the net and am sure everyone will be disappointed if I do
However that is a morning job off to RFS now
Grumman-581 - 11 Jul 2007 09:36 GMT > I do and do they , however do I have to set up a site?? Actually, you don't have to have set up a full web page... You can just upload the images and then post the URL to them... For example, I can just give the URL to this JPEG image:
http://grumman581.googlepages.com/n581-nm.jpg
You don't even have to have an HTML page that refers to it...
> I have never up loaded pictures to the net and am sure everyone will be > disappointed if I do Just don't claim that they're great shots -- otherwise, someone will be around to burst your bubble shortly enough... <grin>

You can download software from google (picasa) that helps you sort your pictures, pick the ones you want to upload and then upload them and automatically optimize them for you. You'll then have a page with your own name on it that you can send people to to view your photos individually or in a slide show. I have a few of mine there at: http://picasaweb.google.com/george.cathcart. It's all free, and people don't need to open an account to view your pictures.
There's also flickr, which is a bit clunkier but enables you to see and comment on other peoples' photos. www.flickr.com.

Grumman-581 - 11 Jul 2007 23:59 GMT > Thanks very much for the info. I'm home alone today so might give it a go. If you've already got a gmail account, the Picasa is a good choice... You can link the photos to your googlepages web page if you so desire... Googlepages gives you about 100M (unless they've changed it) and you can use it to create a quick and dirty web site for personal stuff easily enough... Picasa gives you 1G for photos, so that should handle most people's personal photos... The software for uploading and organizing works pretty good and doesn't require any nasty security holes like Flash to be installed on your machine...

The pic upload is point n' click.

I was with ozemail on this plan who became iinet so maybe I get something special for that reason. Don't know.

It's funny how despite all the killfiling, the killfilor always seems to know what the killfilee has posted. Methinks there's a little prevarication afoot. But hey, who am I, a salesman, to be critical of a little white lie now and then?

I'd have never rated you a coward but if you say so..... Scott, frankly, in a battle of machinists or tech divers I'd cede the floor to you in a heartbeat, but in an international battle of wits you may well be seriously outgunned if not totally bereft of weaponry. You'd do well to just read and try to keep up. Killfiling was a good idea, if only for yer own protection. Leave the heavy lifting to those who can pay the tax. Your family already contributed enough, back before there were tax collectors apparently.

:Don't know where to post them and I will figure out how when you tell me :where. Should do decide to go with your isp, you will need software to get the files from your pc to your isp's server. This type of software has the generic category of ftp, which stands for File Transfer Protocol.
I use Smart FTP, available here, http://www.smartftp.com/

Grumman-581 - 12 Jul 2007 01:59 GMT > I use Smart FTP, available here, http://www.smartftp.com/ Of course, this assumes that your ISP's web page allows you to upload via FTP -- I've encountered some that require you to use an HTTP interface for uploads, just like GooglePages... This is bearable enough for uploading a couple of files, but when you want to upload an entire site, this is painful enough that you'll learn to hate it fairly quickly... Even if they do allow an FTP interface to it, you can either do it by way of the FTP command line or you can use IE to browse the FTP folder (performing normal type drags and drops of files) and not need an additional piece of FTP software... That said, most people do choose to use something different than a command line FTP interface for it... Personally, I have various scripts that I've written that utilize the command line FTP utility... Sometimes I use a GUI based FTP utility... It just depends upon what I'm wanting to do at the time...

It kind of depends upon how much they want to protect you from yourself... I've written command line scripts and utilities that allow me to upload single files, wildcarded files, and directories to my web site so that I don't need to use GUI based tools... It just depends upon your work flow... Sometimes command line tools are better, sometimes GUI ones are better...
