Hello, I'm James. I have been scuba dive a few times and was wondering
what kind of equiptment i should get for diving for practice in my
swimming pool. It is only 5 feet deep and I would like to stay under
for at least 45min - 1hour. I was thinking about getting a pony bottle
with a regualtor but I'm not shure if you can use a regular old
regulator with a pony bottle. Thanks!

Why not practice in the bathtub instead?  I use my twinned 120s and
can stay down about 5 hours.

The cost of a pony bottle will probably be as must as an AL80, so go
with it... A 1 hour dive at 5 ft should be easily achieved with an
AL80 unless your air consumption rate is *really* bad... On the other
hand, you could rig up a shop type air compressor with a really long
hose to your 2nd stage... Kind of a homemade hooka system...

Generally considered a poor idea. Most shop compressors use compressor oil,
something that's not normally considered a good thing to have in your lungs.

Sorry, forgot to add that it should be the oil-less type of
compressors like you tend to find being sold for most home use at Home
Depot, Lowes, and Sears... The ones with the 10-20 gallon tanks on
them... I've used them for a fresh air supply for a positive air
pressure mask when working with chemicals that really nasty warnings
on their MSDS...

Hi James.  I suggest you rent a normal tank and do it once.  You might
decide that once is enough and then you won't have to worry about it
anymore.

By the way, has anyone been rude to you yet?

Rude?

Define the term, with cites...

Not sure what you plan to learn with a pony bottle as you'll have to rig it
up or hold it.  Just rent the tank, regulator and BC and have a good time.

With only a 5 ft pool, he doesn't need the BC... One could even argue
that he doesn't even need a harness / backplate for the tank...

I've tested out my equipment in my pool my times...he will not need a BC

I was thinking in terms of making it easy to swim along the bottom of the
pool -- just something to hold the tank.  BC may be overkill, but he may
need some weight to scoot along the bottom.  If he can fine-tune his
buoyancy he should be able to swim along at 2.5".

At most, all he needs is a plastic backplate for a harness like we
used to use (and I used on some of my recent dives in SoFL)...

A steel 72 tank...

Perhaps a weight belt and weights, depending upon how positively
buoyant he is without weights...

And a regulator...

This is assuming that he already has a mask and fins (if so
desired)...

If all he is wanting to do is sit on the bottom of a 5 ft pool, he can
come up with a rig off of ebay fairly cheaply... He might also want to
check with CraigsList.org to see what he can find in his local area so
that the shipping doesn't end up costing him so much... I've seen
steel 72s go for $15 each on there...
