Say - I heard there are wrecks in the Sound...some old U-Boats. Anyone
ever dive the sound or know anyone who has? How is it in July?

I have dived the sound in my youth, didn't like it much vis was crap and it
was cold. Don't know about U Boats but there are heaps of wrecks.A good book
on the area is WRECKS AND RESCUES ON L.I. by Van something whick I assume is
still around

The U-853 is just off Block Island in 130' of water. Good dive. I
don't recall the water temperature, but IIRC my son dove it wet and
didn't freeze. Chuck Wade goes out there in the Sea Turtle and there
are charters to be had from the RI side, too. The USS Bass is also in
the general area somewhere and a bit deeper but I haven't dived it yet.

Visibility in the Sound itself is said to be poor on a good day. I'd
rather try to dive the Block Island area or the ocean side of LI.

Which is in Rhode Island and only ~20 miles east of Montauk point, so
its almost close enough to be considered a Long Island Sound dive :-)

Local TV weather report last night had surf temperatures in the low/
mid 60's. Figure the bottom to be at least 10F cooler.

This is what I've always heard; I'd probably expect 10ft viz.
