What exactly does this mean.  I run a forum on divetheworld.com and have
often wondered about the networking possibilities of vBulletin forums.
I used to run a BB system in the days before the internet and we used to
share threads using the Wildcat system and was wondering if it's
possible between vBulletin.  All the SCUBA boards seem to bounce along
autonomously and you have to jump from forum to forum to get any decent
information which seems to defeat the objective of the internet.

Does anyone have any thoughts on this?

Syndicated Content is that which is generated 'somewhere', but is then
updated automatically without human intervention 'elsewhere'.  RSS
feeds are one example.

There's simplistically two basic choices:  provide a gateway from the
other source to add to your site, or abolish your site and join the
other.

The general problem is a bunch of "Johnny Come Lately" types who are
creating the proliferation of alternative discussion venues that end
up diluting the existing ones.  They each have their own motivation
for why they do this, with one of the typical patterns starting out to
be purely altruistic, but with the web-based systems, invariably
looking for ways to help pay for its expense  (advertising, paying
members, etc).  Overall, with the exception of listserv and USENET
based systems, I doubt that any have been able to last for even ten
years without looking for some sort of revenue means.

When I ran a BBS system it was free of charge and no advertising and it
was run as a hobby.  That's the same with my current forum.  I don't
advertise and cover the costs myself as part of my diving hobby.

Well, you *could* do something like that, but why would you want to
try to improve upon perfection?
