We have a big covered porch a stones throw from the water.

A mild southwester blowing in, just enough to give us sun and rain in
altering duty cycles.

Two big dogs lounging on the porch not too far from the grill, acting like
they don't know what's coming.

Big ole Idaho bakers that have been olive oiled, garlic powder, fresh black
pepper, celery salt and kosher salt on 'em and wrapped in foil on the grill
at 400.

4 fatty New York steaks all seasoned and rubbed up proper resting at room
temperature, waiting for friends to arrive, then they hit the grill.

Shrimp season opens on the 5th, with a daily limit of 80. Hood Canal spots
are without peer.

This year the rules have been changed so that we get to take them diving, as
long as you don't penetrate the shell.

I bust my a.s to live here, and times like this make it worth the effort.

Consider this an open invitation to any and all rec.scubii to join us for
good diving, good food and good life.

Scott, per our previous emails, I really would like to get over there.  I
was over to the "west side" and had some shore dives off Whidbey and some
boat dives out of Friday Harbor last week.
Did not have enough time to get out to Hood.  Thanks again for the info on
the RV parks in the area though.

While I cannot offer any diving comparable to your area, we do have some
exceptional boat cruising over here, and I can guarantee we do a great BBQ.
You have my email, let me know if you are ever headed east! Dan

How was the diving?

This time of year it can be really good, or you cant see the hand at the end
of your arm.

Man, when things slow down we are going to be headed east, but way south.

Couer D Alene is dead in the middle of Gods Country, and Pend Oreille is
just north and out of town from there.

One of the few places we would live if we couldn't live here...

Well, if your travels take you past where I live, do drop in.

Although I see that it may not be that far "east and south". ;-)

I keep my boat in Bayview on POR most the year, then haul to the coast for a
cruise.  Wide load crap is a pain, but sure is nice cruising, especially up
north in BC. But, I do like living in this area.

Diving was about 50%--two real good with reasonable vis, two not so good as
vis was down to about 5 feet. Some remarkable size Ling down there.

Yeah we get 5-6 foot lings here pretty commonly.

Have you been up around Texada Island, Powell River, etc. yet?

Yes, been to a few places up there.  One problem I have is that when
cruising up there, I only take two tanks, one each for my wife and I. There
are places up there in BC where fills are hard to find, and a couple places
that could not get above 2800 PSI in our 3500psi tanks.  Usually means only
one dive and then hunt for a fill.  Wish I could spare the space/weight for
a compressor.

That's always a big headache with HP tanks.  Many of the SoCal dive
boats can't get more than 3,000 in them, if that.  A set of big LP
tanks and a winch to haul them up post-dive will add up to less than
the cost of a compressor.

I would even be happy with a couple extra AL 80s but, space is at a premium.
Might not be a bad idea to get some LP Steels that can get a good fill most
anywhere.  I do have a davit, but it's for the dingy;).

Shitcan the HP tanks and get some LP 95's from either Faber or Worthington.

Aw shucks, ain't it nice when we agree on something

(I was joking about the winch, but the extra weight is a PITA with LP
tanks - though they may take a few pounds off the belt to somewhat
compensate)

I am considering a set of LPs as my second set.  My wife does not seem to
burn much air, so in the HPs we have an 80 and a 100. She likes that short,
relatively light tank.
Ours are PST, but I think the Faber LPs are available here.

I take it that this is a recommendation from Scott - if so, I'll have to
second him.  The diving in & around Vancouver island, the gulf islands,
& the Sunshine coast is great.  I take it you (Danlw) are up in the
Prince Rupert area (or farther north)?  That would be a long cruise, but
if you make it to Powell river fills (at least to 3000) shouldn't be a
problem.

As it turns out I'm heading off to the sunshine coast on Saturday.  I'll
try and remember to ask the shops there about HP fills.

I am jealous.

I have been up there to dive 3 times including Skookumchuck Narrows.

Ahh, that kinda "dog".  I've re-earned my "k-dog" nickname at b-ball
this year (on account of my strikeout record), so I'm a little sensitive
to the whole "dog" nicknames right now ;-)

You're pretty lucky to have hit the narrows - I've been up there twice
and the narrows were undivable both times.  This trip isn't looking much
better - the narrows are cooperating, but I'm dragging a few newbies
this time around, and that isn't a newbie-type of dive :(

I usually don't go as far as Prince Rupert, though I have gone all they way
up to Alaska and back.  I was up by Powell River
year before last, but only went as far as Pender Harbor, Princes
Louisa/Chatterbox Falls last year.  Was able to get a fill at Egmont, though
I couldn't talk my wife into diving Skoocumchuck narrows.

Sure would appreciate getting current info on fills up that way.

Thanks, Dan
