Eel attack!

Greg Mossman - 16 Apr 2007 01:37 GMT It finally happened. I don't know how many times I told her she was going to get bitten if she continued to tease moray eels with her finger, but she's learned her lesson now the hard way.
Yesterday, while diving off Lanai (at Lighthouse), Janna was trying to point out an eel to me. She reached in to stroke its tail, and apparently the unseen head was nearby and pissed off or hungry or both. I heard the scream, saw the "green" blood start to flow, and grabbed her hand to staunch the bleeding and get her back to the boat OK. When we surfaced, her hand was flowing red. A visit to the hotel doc, followed by a trip to the ER, and she's now bandaged and enjoying the Vicodin.
She ended up with some pretty nasty lacerations to her 2nd and 3rd fingers on the right hand. ER Doc didn't want to put in too many stitches as he feared that might increase the risk of infection. Apparently moray mouths aren't too clean. He put one stitch in each of the six worst cuts, but if it heals the way it looks now, she'll end up with nasty scars. No nerve or tendon damage, though the doc warned that she might end up needing some PT to gain full use of the fingers and recommended we find a hand specialist when we get home.
I hated to say "I told you so" but did anyway. Many times. I think she got the point.
I'm ordering eel tonight at the sushi bar. Evil bastards.

Anyways, hope Janna heals quickly and isn't in too much discomfort.

Greg Mossman - 16 Apr 2007 03:00 GMT > > It finally happened. > > A real gentleman would have blocked the offender, taking the bite > himself. ;-) That would have been tough, even for a real gentleman. Had you been around, though, you could have smashed open the coral head and we could have beaten the eel to death.
> Anyways, hope Janna heals quickly and isn't in too much discomfort. Thanks. I'll pass that on to her. She was feeling more sorry than anything, apologizing for ending my dive, apologizing for getting blood all over the boat. I asked, "what are you apologizing for, you're the one with the shredded hand?" She wanted me to go on the second dive. At least I was gentleman enough to pass on that (besides, it was cold!). Fortunately the captain thought it a bit rough to do a second dive off Lanai and headed back to Maui, dropping us off on the way to the second dive site. I think he just didn't want any more blood on his boat.
She also apologized to my cousin for missing her pre-wedding BBQ yesterday afternoon, but her apologies were again quickly dismissed. Even my family isn't selfish enough to hold that against her. We'll make the wedding today after I dress up Janna's hand with some stylish gauze and tape.
I really just hope she'll reform her eel-poking ways. She still claims to love the evil elongated creatures and I have little doubt that she'll go back to poking as soon as she heals. Next time she might not be lucky enough to retain all her fingers. Maybe I'll get her a chain mail glove. I wonder what the Bonaire and Cayman dive nazis would make of that!

Sorry to hear about Janna's accident. Hope she heals properly and everything turns out fine. Feel free to tell her I said so.

It looks like she didn't get an infection, so now it's a matter of deciding whether to let it heal as is, or get some more work done to reduce the scarring. The local they gave her at the ER, several "ring block" injections right to the bone, hurt her much more than the eel, and she's reluctant to have to get any more.

Evil bastards. I hope you're not serious about your anger at eels. It reminds me of a woman I was buddied up with on a dive to the Coronado Islands off San Diego. All of the sudden she started killing sea urchins. Back on the boat I asked her why and she told me she was injured once by running into some sea urchins. Needless to say I never dove with her again. And the irony is she's a pediatric nurse at the Children's Hospital.

Not the most politically correct thing to admit --- but when we would dive down in the Coronado's Islands, we too would break open the urchins and feed them to the Garibaldi and Seniority fish. Urchin here are taking over and killing off the kelp population in many areas --- so I feel no guilt in crushing a few to feed the other guys!

Really long shot :-)))) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pomerania#Origin_and_meaning_of_the_name In Polish and couple of other Slavic languages origin is quite obvious and Latin version is derived from them. I was only curious about German version of the name if it is distorted thru centuries Slavic name or maybe has other roots.

SE of Krakow.
In the surrounding area there are some beautiful villages and great day walks. Apparently excellent summer hiking in the Mtns as well

She is lucky that it wasn't worse. A Belizean friend of mine, almost lost his whole arm. He's got some pretty nasty scars.
I must say, you are being charitable considering you are a sharkbite victim.

She had fun showing it off at the wedding (one of the guests was an ER doc, so we also got a free consult). Champagne and Vicodin is apparently a good combination.

> I must say, you are being charitable considering you are a sharkbite victim. Being invulnerable, the shark bite didn't even break the skin. And I'm sure I've teased as many eels as she has, but my fierce visage cows them into submission.
I almost got my hand munched by a spotted eagle ray on Friday. Those guys have plates much nastier than the stingrays of Stingray City. I was always afraid of feeding horses when I was a kid, so I have no idea why I let the winged beastie munch a few mussels out of my hand. Fortunately, probably again due to invulnerability, it didn't munch any muscles.
