For any of you Navy folks (or Marines) who may know this:

On some Naval vessels (carriers in particular that I've noticed), I've seen the above
designations "WTD" or "NWTD" on the hatches to various rooms on board. The best
I can come up with would be "Water Tight Door" vs. "Not Water Tight Door"  unless
someone can say otherwise.

Of course, the "Male Chauvanist Pig" in me had wondered at one time if it meant
"No Women This Deck" but that would be streching it I think..... <D & R> :-)

Just currious.... Thanks.

You are mostly correct.

Funny part is that you get your a.s reamed for calling a hatch a door, but
there it is in big letters.

Normally, the WTD doors require manipulation of several locking mechanisms,
and are positioned to keep the ocean out during normal, heavy or underway
sea conditions. NWTD hatches are behind WTD hatches.

The curse of the ancients be on you for going through a WTD hatch and not
dogging it behind you.

Yah!!! So many Naval Superstitions!!! No wonder there are such things as the
"Crossing the Line" ceremony etc.

Not sure how good a "Pollywog" I'd be.

Kiss the Royal Baby.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Line-crossing_ceremony (for the room).

I never got the honor of crossing the equator, but my fellow Marines who had
indicated they were asked if they would like to join in the festivities,
many refused.

Mandatory for swabbies.
